Review: Sun-Bird Asian Stir Fry Seasoning and Eckrich Cheese Flavored Smoked Sausage

Create a Delicious Main Course on a Budget with an Asian Taste

Teresa Mahieu
If you are like me, you enjoy a good Chinese restaurant meal but with the economy as it is we can't always afford that restaurant meal ticket. Why not create a delicious Stir-Fry meal at home that the whole family can enjoy. This evening I did just that. This meal is not made with an authentic Asian flair but it is wholesome and filling. Served over a bed of rice I cooked using my favorite kitchen item, the electric rice cooker pot, this was given a thumbs up by both my husband and me.

The Sun-Bird Brand Asian Stir-Fry Sauce is mild and delicious. The Eckrich Cheese flavored Skinless Smoked Sausage had a nice mild flavor also and it was not greasy at all. The Stir-Fry sauce adds about 15 calories to a 2 cup serving of Stir-Fry, not including the calories from the sugar or soy sauce. The stir-fry seasoning contains 260 mg sodium. The Smoked Sausage lists a serving size of 2 ounces for 180 calories and 16 total g. of fat with 450 mg of sodium. I was afraid this meal may taste salty but it did not. This meal is not for a person watching his or her calories; however the added vegetables are good for the fiber content. Low Sodium Soy Sauce can be used for those watching their sodium consumption.

Ingredients for your Sausage and Vegetable Stir-Fry

1 - 14 oz. package Eckrich Skinless Cheese Smoked Sausage (or smoked sausage of your choice, I have also used Polska Kielbasa)
1 - Sun-Bird Brand Stir-Fry Seasoning Mix
Vegetables of your choice

Seasoning Mix Preparation

To prepare the Stir-Fry seasoning you will need these additional ingredients:

2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 teaspoons sugar
1/3 cup water

Mix the soy sauce, sugar and water together with the stir-fry seasoning packet and set aside while preparing the rest of the stir-fry meal.

Meat and Vegetable Preparation

Cut the Eckrich Skinless Smoked Sausage into bite-size pieces. (Being budget conscious I saved a 6 inch section for my husbands lunch during the upcoming week.) Place in a large skillet or wok over low heat to start browning. The stir-fry packet calls for browning in 2 tablespoons oil, I did not use the oil.

Choose the vegetables you wish to include in your stir-fry and wash them. The Stir-Fry packet suggests the following:
1 Red Bell Pepper
1 Onion
2 Celery Stalks
2 Carrots
Broccoli Florets

For this stir-fry meal I used what I had on hand:
A small head of broccoli, cut up
1/2 a red onion, sliced thickly and pieces separated and cut in half
1/2 a green bell pepper, sliced into bite size pieces

(Remember to check the meat browning in the skillet while cutting the vegetables. You may add non-stick cooking spray, if needed, if you choose not to use the oil.)

Other suggested items to add to your stir-fry would be:
Water chestnuts
Sliced Mushrooms
Snow Peas
those little Baby Corns

Or Use A 1-lb pkg. frozen oriental vegetables without sauce in place of the fresh vegetables.

~Any fresh or frozen vegetables you may have left over from another meal would be great in this stir-fry.~

Adding Vegetables and Sauce to the Meat

Add the cut up fresh vegetables to the browned Eckrich Skinless Cheese flavored Smoked Sausage and stir-fry until done as desired. My bell peppers were still a bit crunchy. The broccoli will become a brighter green as it cooks. This stir-fry time does not take long at all. Now add the prepared seasoning mixture and stir-fry 1-minute or until thickened. Your Asian Sausage and Vegetable Stir-Fry is now ready to be served over a serving of cooked rice. I am sure you and your family will agree this is a tasty and easy dish to prepare. Enjoy!
