Review of Sundae Shoppe Fudge Swirl Ice Cream

Brad Kamer

Living with a large family that has daily cravings for sweets requires a home to be stocked with plenty of desserts on hand. Summertime is predominantly the season for various ice cream purchasing. As this creamy dessert tends to get quite expensive, I occasionally opt for purchasing this treat in the bulk five quart size buckets. There are several brands out there that sell the standard flavors such as French vanilla, chocolate, cookies and cream, and fudge swirl. I recently decided to try out a large bucket of Sundae Shoppe Fudge Swirl which was sold at the local Aldi supermarket.

Convenience

This is not the first time I have purchased large scale volume size ice cream and most likely will not be the last. I like the sturdy plastic bucket container that keeps the ice cream sealed tight as opposed to those 1.75 quart sized containers with the paper flaps that seem to make the ice cream prone to discoloration or lose freshness fairly quickly. The little bucket handle even comes in handy when toting this ice cream from garage freezer to the kitchen counter where the dessert assembly line occurs. The bucket is rather large and I would imagine this frozen dessert could become a storage challenge for those people without very large freezer space.

Taste

The taste of fudge swirl ice cream by Sundae Shoppe rates average. I have tasted much better ice cream though paid a premium for it. This ice cream holds up well as a side accompaniment to birthday cake or with sundae extras such as chopped nuts, bananas, whipped cream, and cherries. If I am looking for a tasty small bowl of ice cream, I would prefer to spend the extra few bucks on a more established premium brand of ice cream such as Breyers or Edy's.

Price

The bucket of Sundae Shoppe Fudge Swirl Ice Cream costs a mere $4.99 without tax. That is the price charged at the local Aldi and is a far cry from several competing brands that sell similar sized ice cream the six to seven dollar range. I rate this one a strong buy when choosing bulk ice cream to go with cake for a large birthday gathering or just to have on hand for lots of kids and their neighborhood friends.

Overall Satisfaction

I like the convenience of the large bucket as well as the ability to reuse this container for storing numerous household items such as hardware, crayons, or even art supplies. The price for this treat like all other Sundae Shoppe products is tough to beat. The taste of this concoction is average at best as the fudge tastes pretty decent but the vanilla is quite weak. I would recommend this product strictly as a cake or ala mode accompaniment only.
