Review: Super Bowl 2006 Ad for Desperate Housewives

Susan Hamlin
Real men love "Desperate Housewives."

That's the premise behind this effective 2006 Superbowl promo ad for the Sunday night ABC show. The thirty second spot features Sugar Ray Leonard, Tony Hawk, Shaquille O'Neal and Hugh Hefner. We love the premise!

Hef, surrounded by his three domesticated blondes, urges Edie to "settle down." Shaq is so devastated by Gaby's miscarriage he can't even shoot a routine basket. When he looks sadly over his shoulder and says "I'm so upset Gaby lost the baby" we're convinced. Tony Hawk's deep concern over Bree's excessive drinking touches the heart, not to mention our funny bone.

This entertaining send up of the "Desperate Housewives" expected viewership manages to avoid condescension simply because of its charm. What audience could be insulted by the sight of Sugar Ray Leonard worrying over poor Lynette's children's welfare, now that she is back at work?

Of course we're not insulted. We're too busy being utterly amused.
