New Super Mario Bros is very similar to the classic Super Mario Bros games. It is off course a 2d platform game but with 3D-ish characters and scenery. It features new Power ups and enemies. The goal of the game is the same as in the old ones, reach the flag pole at the end of the level before the time limit.
The game has a total of 80 levels, divided in 8 different worlds. Each world has at least one tower (where you fight mini-bowser) and one castle, where you fight a bigger boss before reaching the next world. However, you do not need to complete every world to "beat" the game. You can skip worlds by using cannons (reached by completing certain levels through the alternate exit (red flag)). Also, without using cannons, you still don't have to complete every world. World 4 and 7 are reached only by beating the boss in world's 2 and 5 castle as mini mario, so he can reach the alternate exit. But, those 2 worlds are kind of "optional".
In each level, there are 3 hidden star coins which are used to unlock levels, and mushroom houses which are places you can get lives and power ups. Also, every time you complete a tower or a castle for the first time or you unlock a mushroom house or level using your star coins, you get to save. You cannot save when you want in the game, which i would say is kind of a down side when you have to stop playing and can't save what you've done.
As for the multiplayer mode, unfortunately i never got to try it out. However, you only need 1 cartridge to play multiplayer mode. Oh and I almost forgot, there are also mini-games. 18 of them and 10 for multiplayer play. The down side with the mini-game is most of them are the same that we're in Super Mario 64 DS, so if you played that game and played the mini-games, you're gonna be disappointed if you expected a lot new games.
As a conclusion I would say that it is a VERY good game, even though there are a few down sides. I would suggest it to everyone who liked older and newer Super Mario Games but I would like to say that I wish it was a bit longer but it's okay.
