Review of Treasure by the Cocteau Twins

Ethereal, Incomprehensible, Beautiful, Haunting with a Silly Band Name. the Cocteau Twins. Every Shoe-gazers Fave Romantic Outing

Going against popular opinion, the 80's produced some of the very best music in the last 30 years. Unfortunately not too much of it found it's way to the airwaves of the more popular radio stations who were held ransom by the big record companies it would seem. Take for instance the music from this album.

The Cocteau Twins 'Treasure' is a beautiful nonsensical work of art. A precursor to quite a few bands to come, probably most notably 'The Sundays'. Now as far as I know nobody knew what the hell Liz Frazer was singing about & I'm not too certain she did either (old Spanish Latin or something). However none of that is important because mood & feel & emotion are what's important & are presented here in a fabulously unique way. The great guitar work of 'Robin Guthrie' suggesting an almost supernatural ghostly quality. A more beautiful accompaniment you couldn't wish for. Then there are Liz Frazer's smoothed out vocals, with none of the rather affected warblings of their earlier recordings, soothing the listener with its soft gentle tones. Just close your eyes shut out external noise and immerse yourself in the wonder of this record. I admit to finding myself singing along to 'IVO'. I find that not understanding the words is totally unimportant since you will still understand each songs soul more than most of the garbage presented to us in these here 90's, when unfortunately even when you do understand the vocals you are stupefied that some of today's musicians ever graduated past kindergarten.

For me this is their Opus Album & certainly one of the top 30 British Albums of the 80's. If you have any Cocteau Twins recordings & not this then you owe yourself a trip into this wonderful land. Buy, buy, buy this endless classic. Just beautiful.
