Review of Tron: Evolution Battle Grids Game Based on 'Tron: Legacy' Movie

"Tron: Legacy" is a movie about video games so it should be no surprise to anyone that a movie based on a video game would get its own video game. "Tron: Legacy" gets two different games depending on whether you get the game for Nintendo or another system. The Nintendo DS and Wii have there own version. It is not uncommon for a game to either be made only for Xbox 360 and the PS3 or only for the Wii. The reason for this is the Wii is not as powerful a gaming system and can not play the games for the PS3 and Xbox 360. So usually the Nintendo games are geared for kids and families and not as good. With the "Tron: Legacy" games this is not the case.

Tron: Evolution Battle Grids is available for the Nintendo Wii and the Nintendo DS. As you would expect the DS version is not as good as the Wii version so will not be covered in this article. Tron: Evolution Battle Grids offers two choices of play a free play mode and a story mode.

The free play mode is actually my favorite. Fans of the old "Tron" movie and games will enjoy the free play mode. Free play lets you play classic games from "Tron" you love like Light Cycles and Grid Tanks. These games have been updated from the 80's versions and offer great simple play but with better graphics and more options. Free play also allows you to play with up to four players. Fans of the old Tron games will love free play but it also will be well received by those that are new to the Tron franchise as well. Having multiple games and multi-player games keeps free play from becoming repetitive and boring.

Story mode does not add anything to the Tron canon. Many elements of free play are still in story mode but you are limited at times such as when you leave Tron City. There are characters from the Tron movie but only Quorra plays any major role. The game is easy to beat and can be played through quickly which is how most Nintendo games are. For fans of the movie the story mode and free play mode or only loosely based on the movie.

While the story mode may be a weak point it is similar to many other Nintendo games which are targeted for kids and families and not hard core gamers. I would buy this game just for the free play mode. In my mind the story mode is just an extra and the real reason to buy this game is the free play mode which is a update of the original arcade. If you loved the movie and wished they had more of the games then the free play mode will keep you entertained for the next film in the franchise.
