We may all remember Neil Patrick Harris as the young genius of the television show, "Doogie Howser, MD." He has grown up quite a bit since then and he has honed his comedic talent as well. He is totally believable as the womanizing tom-cat Barney, even though we now know he is gay.
Neil Patrick Harris came out in People magazine. He said he is happy to dismiss any rumors, and is happy to say that he is a "very content gay man living my life to the fullest." He goes on to say he is happy with his job and with the people he works with.
He states the reason he came out was due to "speculation and interest in my private life and relationships." The gay community has been speculating on Harris' sexuality for many years. On October 23rd a Canadian website reported that Harris allegedly got his partner David Burtka, a role on "How I Met Your Mother."
When the media did not repeat the item, it is reported that Harris' publicist issued a statement that, "He is not of that persuasion." Harris told people magazine he has never denied the fact he is gay, so the accuracy of the publicist's statement is in doubt.
Other prominent entertainers who have recently come out are singer Lance Bass and actor T.R. Knight of "Grey's Anatomy." It doesn't seem to have made any difference for Harris at CBS, as no one from the series or CBS has made any public comment on the fact of Harris coming out.
Neil Patrick Harris is also one of the few child stars who transitioned successfully to an adult star. Harris and Knight are both actors who play straight men on their shows. Knight and Harris are breaking down the stereotypical caricature of the gay man and the roles that they are able to play.
It doesn't seem to have made much of an impact on the popularity of the show or the character. This is a long way from when Ellen Degeneres came out on her television show "Ellen." It seems the American viewing public is getting used to finding out that some of their favorite entertainers are gay.
Neil Patrick Harris is a happy and fulfilled gay man. He is a positive role model that balances out the old stereotypes of gay men being feminine and mincing. Things have changed in the public perception of gay and lesbian actors and actresses. It has never affected Jodi Foster and the roles she has been offered. Though Jodi Foster has never publicly come out, it is pretty common knowledge that Miss Foster won't be marrying any of her leading men anytime soon.

Post a CommentHow is this a review of How I Met Your Mother may I ask. HIMYM is a great show that always succeeds in cracking me up. A lot of that has to do with Barney yes, but I hardly see how NPH being gay has anything to do with how good the show is.
