Review of Twilight by Stephanie Meyer

Penreliant
For many years, Vampires have been a popular subject of interest for people of all generations. It seems that the Twilight series has recently revamped this trend. The true question of this though is if the book stays true to the Vampire tradition that we've all grown to know today.

I picked up the book and while it is good because it has encouraged the younger generation to start reading again, it's also very poorly written. The character depths are weaker than ever and so is the storyline for while Meyer seems to mask it as complex, it's really not.

The main story is that Bella, a human, falls in love with Edward, a vampire. Edward can't be with Bella because she's like, "his own personal brand of heroin." Meaning, if he goes for her, then he'll end up just drinking her blood and killing her. The problem with this is, Vampires such as the one found in Dracula and Buffy the Vampire series simply don't care about 'love.'

This also leads into the fact that Vampires most certainly do not sparkle the way that Stephanie Meyers writes them to do in the sun. When really, Vampires burn in the sun. They also can't fly and they don't have super strength either.

Not only does she completely miss the mark of a traditional vampire, but she writes it all very weakly too. Not to mention the fact that Bella and Edward fall "in love" only after talking to one another two or three times. The franchise is taking over and it's sad because it's very much so like what's going on in the music industry.

To put it to scale, it's like comparing The Sex Pistols to the Jonas Brothers. It just isn't going to happen because it doesn't work that way. The Sex Pistols were much hands-on with their music where as Jonas Brothers are a corporate band designed to sell.

It works the same way with this Twilight series. No way does Twilight measure up to Dracula, but it's simply corporated to sell. Personally, as a Vampire fan myself, I found this book neither accurate or written well. On the other side, most who are in the age group of the Twilight franchise weren't around for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and don't really have nothing to compare it to.

With that said, this book isn't for the advanced reader or vampire fan, but it's perfect for someone who hasn't read very many books especially on vampires for with nothing to compare it to, the book is okay.

While I agree that Twilight is written poorly, particularly the characterization, I disagree with your comments about the vampires. There's no hard and fast rule that one has to stick with the traditional vampire lore--indeed, it's actually better to branch out into something original, like vampires sparkling. Although I personally thought that was rather stupid, and Bella was just annoying.
