Review of Universal Audio's LA-610 Preamp / Compressor

S.R.
The LA-610 preamp / compressor by company Universal Audio is solely intended to be a budgeted version of their more famously praised preamps and compressors in a single unit. It seems somebody forgot to tell them that budget versions of things are supposed to suck, because for the price the value of this unit is absolutely unbeatable and incredible.

We'll start with the LA-610 preamp portion of this unit. Powered by several quality tubes, the preamp accurately recreates the old vintage warmth found on many classic recordings. The knobs are standard but solid fare from company Universal Audio. Gain, -15db pad switch, Polarity Reversal switch, Phantom Power switch, Level knob. All are in tip top condition and function as intended with no fuss, no muss. Also included on this portion of the preamp compressor unit are two classic style EQ knobs with accompanying frequency range selectors, intended for low and high frequencies respectively. The EQ is very wonderfully responsive, aptly dialing into your exact settings without ravaging your tone at all. Overall, if you had paid for the EQ alone it would still be worth it. Fortunately for us however, they added in the real jewel of this rack unit:

The famous optical compressor. Ideal for vocals and other sensitive applications and tones, the one included on the LA610 sounds so very close to the more famous models you'd be wondering which one is in hearing tests. The compressor comes in two modes: Compressor (Center) and Limit (Right) with an optional Bypass (Left) mode. Both compress your signal extremely gently while keeping the subtle nuances of your performances. The two knobs adhere to the classic style of compression: Peak Reduction and Gain. Both are silky smooth and have very sensitive response allowing you to dial in the exact tone you need.

A classic style output monitor is also placed onto the right of the rack unit. This is very, very convenient in making sure your volume levels do not clip and cause the appropriate distortion.

The rack unit is very, very sturdy. The knobs are snug and everything is tightened and encased properly. The unit can get extremely hot if left on for extended periods, so take caution in that regard. The materials are all top notch and the unit has been put together with tons of care.

Overall, the quality of this product for the price you pay is nothing short of amazing. Definitely a worthwhile investment for the DIY engineer and home recording enthusiast on a budget.
