I recently switched my VoIP service to Skype, and of course I had to by a new phone, so I purchased the Skype certified USRobotics USB Internet Mini Phone Model 6902 to test out the quality and reliability of the VOIP service.
The size of this phone is very compact and is about the same size as a typical cell phone. Even though it is small, I have not encountered any difficulties talking on it and the callers at the other end can hear me just fine.
The phone is compatible with Windows Vista, XP and 2000, so setting up the phone to work with my computer was as simple as plugging into the USB connection, popping in the CD, and clicking a few buttons. I was able to get the phone setup and making phone calls within a matter of minutes.
This phone is not cordless, so you will need to leave the phone plugged into your USB connection in order to send and receive calls. The cord on the phone is about 6 feet in length, so you are able to move around a bit with phone without being stuck sitting at your computer all the time.
The features on the phone are very basic. It has the Skype button which allows you to navigate the Skype window tabs and scroll through your Skype contacts. The End and Send buttons are very similar to the buttons on your Skype control console which allow you to end or send and receive calls. The phone also features an option to put your caller on hold and mute the phone microphone. That's about it as far as features go for this particular phone.
The call quality is great! The clarity of the phone calls is very clear and I have only experienced a few problems. One problem was with echoing when making a call to a cell phone. This could have very well been the cell phone service I was calling because I have not experienced echoing with any other calls. The only other problem that I encountered was that I could hear the sounds on my computer coming through the ear piece on the phone. This was however easily corrected through the control panel sound settings.
Overall, the phone is very limited in features, but the call quality is great and for the price it makes a great starter phone.
