Review: Weaver Gold Parmesan with Italian Herb Microwave Popcorn

Steve Helmer

I decided to run by Wal-mart last night after going to the gym to pick up a couple things I needed. While there, I ended up walking past their grocery section on my way to the front of the store and something in the snack aisle caught my eye; Weaver Gold Parmesan with Italian Herb Microwave Popcorn.

We already have popcorn in our house (both microwave popcorn and a bag of regular popcorn we purchased from the Boy Scouts) so, when I went to the store, that was one item that was definitely not on my list. And, had it not been for the box (which really stood out from the other boxes of microwave popcorn), I probably wouldn't have even glanced at that aisle. But, considering I will sometimes doctor popcorn up by adding parmesan cheese and other items to it, I was definitely intrigued. When I saw it was just $2 for a box, I was sold and ended up bringing it home.

My wife and I ended up watching a movie last night so, once the kids were in the bed, the first thing I did was pop a bag of this popcorn. This part was as easy as regular microwave popcorn and it was done in roughly the same amount of time (2 minutes). And, much with the regular Pop Weaver popcorn we have in our pantry, the bag was filled to the top with very few un-popped kernels in the bottom.

One of the first things I noticed about this product was the aroma coming from the bag. I've made plenty of popcorn and this was the first one that caught my attention just from the smell. As my wife mentioned, it smelled a lot like pasta.

I didn't even wait for my wife to sit down on the couch with me before I was trying this popcorn and I have to say it was definitely worth the money when it came to taste. The parmesan and spices gave it a great flavor that wasn't necessarily better than regular buttered popcorn but did offer something different from it.

My only complaint about this popcorn is there seemed to be a lot of hard pieces attached to most of the kernels that did have me building a small collection in my bowl because I couldn't chew them. This isn't something I've been experiencing recently with regular Pop Weaver popcorn so it made me wonder if they used lower-quality kernels in the hopes nobody would notice because of the extra flavor.

Overall though, I was very happy with this purchase. As I said before, it is a nice alternative if you want something different from regular buttered popcorn and I do recommend picking up a box.
