I loved white bread! It was soft, and moist, and tasted good! It was so different than organic bread... there was no way I could ever go back. But go back I did, being 8 and having no say in the matter.
This is all background as to why I have bought nothing but white bread for more than 20 years now. Occasionally (in adulthood) I found myself at a sandwich buffet with no white bread and became all the more appreciative of it. Indeed, the adage "absence makes the heart grow fonder" rings true, even though I don't think it was in reference to white bread.
Last weekend I was intrigued when the Sample Lady at Wegman's was handing out Whole Grain White Bread. She must have noticed the utter look of confusion on my face because she stopped to explain it to me. "This tastes like white bread but two slices have a serving of whole grains."
I just couldn't get my head around that. How could it be white bread and and be whiole grain bread at the same time? As I pondered this great mystery of life, she handed me a little cup with a PB&J sample in it. I tasted it.
"Oh my God! " I practically yelled at her.
"I know, " she nodded, "Right?"
"This tastes like white bread!" I gushed, "I can't even tell the difference!"
"It's right down in bakery," she motioned, "Dollar forty-nine a loaf!"
I thanked her and went to get my Wegman's Whole Grain White Bread.
I brought it home thinking that my family would not be able to believe this! They both looked at the label suspiciously. (Who could blame them?)
We always keep the bread in the fridge, so I kind of forgot about it. A couple days later I pulled it out for breakfast. I made toast from the Wegman's Whole Grain White Bread without telling my family that it wasn't their regular white bread.
My husband took one bite, stopped mid-chew, and said, "What kind of bread is this?"
Not a good sign. I told him that it was Wegman's Whole Grain White Bread. He shook his head, looked at again, shrugged his shoulders, and came to his conclusion. "I'll finish it." Not a high score from Hubby.
Son finally came downstairs, slipped into his seat and took a bite of toast. He ripped off the crust- pretty odd for a 13 year old who eats everything that isn't nailed down. After taking a bite out of the buttery middle he announced, "I don't like this bread." Srike two.
"Really?" I said in disbelief. "I loved it in the store." I took a bite of each of their toasts, and you know what? I didn't like it so much either. Either I was really hungry that day in the store or the peanut butter and jelly hid the flavor of the bread- I'm not sure which- but I had to give the Wegman's Whole Grain White Bread a thumbs-down, too.
I had been so excited about Wegman's Whole Grain White Bread that I even spent the extra 50 cents on it! (And that's saying something from someone as tight as I am!) From now on, it's back to the old 99-cents-a-loaf white bread for us.

If it tastes too good to be true...well you know the rest! Disappointing to say the least! PS...I would have got the joke about you running the Boston Marathon! I get exhausted just watching it on TV! :)
Excellent review! You are so funny! I like your story. I prefer honey-wheat to all of them. Of course, white bread is my favorite but grain is healthier. Plus, white bread puts too many calories on the rear-end. At least that's where all my extra calories go.
Glad I read this excellent and entertaining review before I made a purchase.
I prefer brown bread, but I find that white bread tends to taste better toasted.

I prefer white bread, also.
Don't know if I've seen it here. Great review, Kay!
This sounds like an excellent product. I love Wegman's! Wish we had one here.
This was a fun and entertaining reviewnecdote. Like Kassidy I grew up on white bread and can't stand it now. Guess if you want your kids to eat a certain way as adults you have to feed them the opposite way as kids : ) P.S. I lovvvveee Wegmans... wish we had them in California.
I was raised up on white bread, but I prefer whole grain now. Good review!
