Review of the Weller WLC100 Soldering Station

John Ehle
As a young boy, I took up the interest in the electronics field. I enjoyed learning about different components and learning how to create neat gadgets and experiments. My father had passed down to me an old soldering iron that came in an old army green metal case for me to use. Needless to say, being a young child, I accidently burned holes on the table and hardwood floors when trying to make some of my projects come to life. The biggest cause of soldering iron burns and injuries has to be improper handling.

The Weller WLC100 Soldering Station caught my eye mainly because it seemed to be an all in one solution to my problem. The soldering iron is built into to the whole unit, which safely contains and holds it safely away from items you do not want to get burnt such as a table. A lot of the other soldering irons that I had the pleasure of using only had one temperature setting. With the Weller WLC100 Soldering Station you can variably control the heat setting from 5 to 40 watts. The variable control aspect has really come in handy when it comes to doing a better soldering job.

Soldering for me, is more contained and less messy with the Weller WLC100 Soldering Station. The unit comes with a neat pad located on its side that will let you safely knockoff dried solder and clean off the tip of the iron. Before using the Weller WLC100 Soldering Station, I was accustomed to using a wet wash cloth, which wasn't as effective and safe for my fingers.

I had some reservations about the choice of using this soldering station due to the fact that it is comprised mostly of plastic but remembering the old handed down soldering iron that my father gave me; I realized that it as well had been made of plastic and had lasted for almost 40 years. The Weller WLC100 Soldering Station comes backed with a 7 year warranty and is UL listed. So my initial fears of possibly buying an inferior soldering gun were becoming more and more unfounded.

I have owned the Weller WLC100 Soldering Station for over six months and I am very happy with the performance and safety aspect of the product. I have become more motivated to fix some of the fixable electronics collecting dust inside my garage as well as taken a new interest in electronics itself. The price, in my opinion, is pretty reasonable considering all of the features this product provides.
