Review of the Worst Boxing Names in History

These Boxers Must Have Been Punch-Drunk When Coming Up with These Nicknames

Jessica Batts
Every boxer has a nickname. "Iron" Mike Tyson, Evander "The Real Deal" Holyfield, "The Greatest" Muhammad Ali, "Big" George Foreman & "The Lion" Lennox Lewis, all synonymous with strength and power. A boxers name should be one that strikes fear into their opponent. Of course, there are always those not so tough nicknames, the kind of names that make you wonder if you heard it right. They are like first names that can either be used for a girl or boy...but worse. This is my top 5 list of the worst boxing names in history.

#5) Nate "The Galaxxy Warrior" Campbell For some reason, whenever I hear this name I envision Xena the Warrior Princess with a nerdy star trek twist. Cool name for a show on the sci fi network, but a boxer?

#4) Jerry "Wimpy" Halstead Maybe this was a tactic used to catch his opponents off guard. "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for hamburger today". Out of all the names available, "Wimpy" was the best they could come up with. Besides the character from "Popeye" it reminds me of the old Hefty garbage commercials. It's apparent he was talented at boxing, but his sense of humor could have made him a comedian if he put his stamp of approval on this one.

#3) Pernell "Sweetpea" Whitaker Hearing the word 'sweetpea' strikes fear into children all over the world... when it comes to their dinner. It's difficult to imagine someone being intimidated by a name like this. I'd imagine their worst fear would be losing to a boxer with a nickname of these sorts, but there were plenty. Finishing your career with 40 wins-4 losses-1 draw and 1 no contest, is certainly sweet.

#2) "The Golden Boy" Oscar De La Hoya One of the best boxers pound for pound of all time. There's not much to crack on Oscar about, but his name. This is certainly one of the greatest prima donna nicknames ever to grace the boxing ring. He did however back it up. Maybe he got his name from the numerous gold medals he earned in various championships, the greatest coming in the 1992 Olympic Games.

#1) Darnell "The Ding-a-Ling Man" Wilson Maybe if boxing doesn't work out for him, he can find a role in an adult film.
