Review of YMCA of Elkhart County, Indiana

The YMCA of Elkhart County serves a great portion of the Northern Indiana population. All YMCA's throughout the country place an emphasis on Christian morals and strong families and it was apparent that this location was no different. There are a wide variety of family-building programs available and even when visiting the facility on a normal day, there were members working out and using the equipment from all age groups.

In addition to providing a facility full of work out equipment and sports fields, there are also organized programs and events throughout the year. Those include "Healthy Kids Day," and spring and summer break activities. There are also a variety of programs available to YMCA members of all ages, including an "active older adults" program," preschool and day camps for elementary and middle school students. More fitness related programs include include aquatics, gymnastics, dance, health and wellness and a variety of sports.

As for the facility, though it stays busy, the equipment is usually pretty well kept. Members are responsible for wiping off the machinery themselves with towels they bring or with paper towels provided by the gym. Both the outdoor and indoor pools are also kept clean, though the indoor pool seems more suited more for adult and physical fitness use. There is also an indoor running track available which serves as a nice break from the treadmill.

The Elkhart YMCA staff do keep to themselves unless called upon by a YMCA member. In that case, they are friendly and generally know where to guide you if they don't know an answer to your question.

Some cons to this gym include the fact that you have to pay a $16 monthly fee for a locker and sometimes the equipment isn't work (thought such equipment is marked as such). The pro is the apparent family-like atmosphere and the YMCA's dedication to providing financial assistance to those who may be unable to pay for a membership.

Membership Information: 

Membership prices vary. Joiner fees are $15 for youth, $50 for an adult/senior and $100 for families or a senior couple. Then, general monthly dues are $14.50 for youth, $44 for adult, $41 for senior adult, $55 for family and $51 for senior couple.
