Review of the Youtube Series Goth Lyfe

Independent Animated Series Review

Goth Lyfe is a low budget flash animation style series on youtube that takes you into the high school world of Todd Todderson. Todd is just an average kid, but his normal life changes on his first day of school when he asks the Goth kids where art class is.

Right away two worlds seem to be pulling Todd as the Goth kids want to teach him how to be Goth, but Courtney wants Todd to participate in spirit week and is upset when the Goths prevent Todd from going to the school's pep rally. Instantly this starts a war as Courtney enlists the school geek Roger to help her find a way to deal with the Goths.

Through the episodes we learn an amusing take on the difference between Goths and Emos, see the Goths and Emos battle, meet new characters such as Punklette and watch relationships grow as well as fall apart. Random twists in the show keep it interesting and make the viewer want to keep checking back in to see what happens.

Episodes in Goth Lyfe start of being only about three minutes long and are a little bit rough at first, but as the first season goes on they start to get a little more inventive. One could compare Goth Lyfe to a low quality version of the Goths in South Park if the Goths had there own show. The show makes fun of the stereotypes and does a good job at developing distinct characters. As the episodes progress from the first season into the second the show starts to become a little bit more thought out with a sense of personality.

The Show has claimed a small fan base on youtube and i think it could do pretty well with a little production work. Although sketchy it has a certain appeal that I think especially reaches the younger generation. There is something about the feel of some high school kids screwing around after school having fun that makes the show unique. Although having a similar style to say South Park, Goth Lyfe keeps a sense of innocence and doesn't try to simply push to get a reaction out of viewers. Created for fun this show succeeds in being entertaining and good for a laugh to pass the slow days where there is nothing to do.
