Reviewing Every Hand Revealed by Gus Hansen

Jason Hargreaves
Every Hand Revealed by Gus Hansen is, in essence, a lengthy tournament report written by one of the greatest poker players around today. The objective of the book is to take readers inside the head of Gus, who is viewed as one of the most maniacal players in the game.

As the late and great Chip Reese states in the introduction, "Gus has done something that is very difficult to do: He's brought original thought to an age old game. Many of his ideas on how to play poker have made me take a second look at some conventional strategies I thought to be true."

During the course of this book, Gus takes you through 329 actual hands he played throughout the Aussie Millions tournament in which he finished first for AU$1.5 million. During each hand he describes in detail why he made each decision he did as well as whether it was, in hindsight, the correct decision or not. He is more than forthcoming when he makes mistakes, which is a relief in a typically ego-filled book market.

His style, as most know, is very loose and very aggressive. For these reasons I would recommend that most beginning poker players avoid this book for the time being. The way that Gus plays poker requires a strong ability to read hands and situations and will get a lot of newer players into situations they are just not equipped to handle.

More experienced players who wish to expand their game and learn to play a looser style of poker, are highly encouraged to read this book and put a lot of thought into why he makes specific decisions in certain situations.

Overall I feel this book to be an asset to any serious poker player. While there is a lot of hand history to wade through, it flows well and is surprisingly easy to read.

I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.
