Reviewing the Top Essential Oils for Better Skin

Renee Day
Many people have expressed great satisfaction with the use of essential oils. Small doses of them can sometimes be added to things like moisturizers, lotions and creams to give the particular oil's added effect to the product. Below are some of the best examples of essential oils and what effects they are known to have. (For those with sensitive skin, always be sure to test a small amount of the oil first.)

Patchouli - This is a wonderful oil for the skin. Not only does it promote the regeneration and growth of new cells, it also smoothes out even the most severe cases of cracked, dehydrated skin. It can be used to treat acne, eczema, sores, ulcers, scalp problems and any fungal infections. Patchouli also accelerates the healing of wounds, and prevents rough scarring when the wound heals.

Rose - This oil not only smells wonderful, but softens the skin without leaving any sort of greasy residue. It also tends to make one's skin appear more vibrant. Rose oil is also considered an anti-oxidant.

Evening Primrose - This oil has been found beneficial in the treatment of the eczema, psoriasis, and acne. It is commonly found as an additive in skin creams and lotions. Evening Primrose can be combined with carrier oils to create a base to treat damaged skin. It is also believed to prevent premature skin aging.

Clary-Sage - This oil is used as a treatment for acne and for the smoothing out of wrinkles. A couple of drops added to your moisturizer is all that is necessary for a noticeable change.

Neroli - Many problematic skin conditions respond well to treatments that include neroli. It can be mixed with a hypoallergenic lotion or base cream. This beautifully aromatic oil is known to stimulate new cell growth, soften scars and wrinkles, and improve the elasticity of your skin.

Tea Tree oil - This oil is best used for "trouble spots". It acts as an anti-inflammatory and is considered an antiseptic. Apply it directly to pimples or even irritated skin, insect bites, boils or minor wounds. It even soothes sunburn, poison ivy or insect stings.

Jasmine - This oil is commonly used to alleviate dry, greasy or irritated skin. It also will not harm those with sensitive skin. Studies have found that this oil also increases skin elasticity and that it has had positive effects on reducing the severity of stretch marks and scars.

Lavender - This oil has a tendency to clear up blemishes as well as balancing the skin's oil production to prevent future breakouts. It can also be used to hydrate dry skin, and has a very pleasant residual odor.

Sandalwood - This is used to treat acne as well as general skin infections due to its antibacterial and antifungal properties. A few drops of sandalwood oil can be added to a clay mask base, along with half a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar

Geranium - This oil is generally used for wrinkles and is considered safe for those with sensitive, oily or dry skin. You can also add a few drops of this to your moisturizer or lotion.
