Revlon Matte Eye Shadow in 'Venetian Blue' Review

The Pen
I have been a big fan of the Revlon Matte makeup collection ever since it came out a few months ago. At first I became a fanatic of the lipsticks, but after trying the eye shadows I began to love those as well.

But one of the eye shadows that I knew I had to try when I first saw it in stores back in March was called Venetian Blue. Venetian wasn't one of those eye shadows that I bought because I thought it was beautiful color or that it'd be flattering, it was actually a really crazy color and I just wanted to try to see how it would look on actual skin.

The thing that makes the Venetian Blue Revlon eye shadow look so interesting is the fact that it looks exactly like the blue chalk that is used on cue sticks when you're playing pool. I'd never seen anything like it in makeup so I bought a compact of it out of curiosity for $4.99 from Walgreens.

As I stated Venetian Blue looks like the loud blue pool chalk, it's very opaque and intense in the package and it didn't seem like it would work at all on me, or anyone else for that matter. But Revlon claims that the eye shadow is a "suede-like powder that glides over lids, providing high impact color and a soft matte finish."

All of the other shadows that I tried from the matte collection were soft, but I just wasn't sure about this one. But I tried the Venetian Blue and was pleasantly surprised.

I applied the shadow to my eyelids (making sure they had no oil on them) with an eye shadow brush and the powder didn't go on that evenly. So I used the sponge that comes with the compact, which I usually never use because they suck, but for some reason it worked well with the Revlon Matte Eye Shadow, it helped the powder to glide on and I got an even application.

I found that the Venetian Blue was very lovely when it went on. The color is not at all the tacky loud blue it seems in the compact, when I added two or three layers on my golden brown skin it transformed into a deep turquoise green or a dusty denim shade. I had to add a lot for it to show up as a brighter blue, and even then it was pretty.

The layers didn't look like I was wearing a heavy opaque shadow the color looked more like a sheer watercolor paint but with a suede texture. Usually I'm not into blue eye shadows because they can look rather dated and tacky, but I found the Revlon Venetian Blue to be flattering and actually quite sophisticated, and it actually made my brown eyes pop.

In the End...

I wasn't expecting to love the Revlon Matte Eye Shadow in Venetian Blue but I did. I always read in magazines how blue eye makeup can make brown eyes stand out but this was the first one that I tried that was soft, glamorous and chic.

One or two layers can look subtle, but more layers can create a brighter look that is still soft and pretty. I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars. I'd recommend it for medium and brown skin tones.
