Revlon Matte Lipstick in "Pink Pout" Review

The Pen
A couple of months ago I was looking through a magazine and saw an ad for Revlon's new Matte Collection. I thought the lipstick the model was wearing looked absolutely glamorous and old Hollywood, and the colors were divine so I decided I had to try them out.

A couple of weeks later I went to an Ulta and tested all of the colors of the lipsticks in the Revlon Matte collection on my hand and wound up buying a shade called Strawberry Suede on the spot. But I also wound up loving a shade called Pink Pout so a few weeks later I purchased a tube of it from CVS for $7.99.

Pink Pout isn't a bold bubble gum pink shade, in the tube it looks more like a soft pink color like a pastel dusty rose shade. Revlon created a very sophisticated glamorous pink that's not at all cheap or tacky looking. I'd never tried a shade of lipstick this color and I thought that it would make my lips look soft and pretty for the upcoming summer.

Revlon claims that the Matte Lipstick would glide effortlessly across lips and that it doesn't dry, cake or flake when it's on. When I tried on the Pink Pout at home I found this to be true, it's rich and thick and moisturizing but it stays put and creates a velvety matte texture.

But boy was I wrong in thinking that Pink Pout was a flattering choice for me. I am African American with a golden brown skin tone, and this shade of Revlon Matte lipstick did not work for my complexion.

The first swipe of Pink Pout just made my lips disappear into my skin. But when I added a couple of more swipes the matte lipstick showed up more. It's not really a rosy color at all when you put it on. It's more of pale pink almost icy mauve color. It's definitely a retro colored lipstick that I remember seeing women on TV from the 60s and 70s wearing.

Because it's more of a pastel pink color it translates as chalky against my skin. It's much lighter than my lips so it did wash me out and my lips just looked way too light for my skin. It also just made every flaw in my skin stand out even worse, like the dark circles under my eyes, green tones, and blotchiness. And it brought out the yellow tones in my teeth. I tried to pile on a bunch of foundation in order to make it work for me, but it's no use, it just ain't for me.

In the End...

I was so disappointed that the Revlon Matte Lipstick in Pink Pout didn't work for me. It's such cool color that reminds me of glamorous pin-ups and the mod swinging 60s. I think it's a way to wear a neutral looking lipstick without having to resort to a boring beige or brown, and it's a pink lipstick that won't make you look as corny as Paris Hilton.

The Revlon Matte Lipstick itself is awesome. It's creamy, moisturizing and doesn't make your lips feel dry or gross, so I will be purchasing other shades in the future. I would only recommend Pink Pout to someone who wants a very glam looking light pink lipstick although I think it would flatter people with fair - almost porcelain skin tones the best.

Even though it didn't work for me I like the color and I like the lipstick I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
