Revlon's Luxurious Lengths Mascara

Buyer Beware, Here You Really Get What You Paid for It!

Patricia Elane
I am a first-time user/buyer of a Revlon product entitled "Luxurious Lengths Mascara". As I've gotten older, my lashes aren't nearly as thick and full as they once were. Over the past five years, I've been trying out a number of mascaras, by different manufacturers, in the hope that they'll live up to their hype.

I was at the drugstore dropping off a prescription, for which I chose to wait to be filled. In order to kill some time, I roamed the cosmetics section of the store. As always, they had a number of products that were for sale in a variety of ways: buy one, get one half-off, buy one, get one free.

I noticed a rack of Revlon products on the bottom shelf that had the big, red "Clearance" signs on them. "Luxurious Lengths Mascara" was one of them. The clearance price was $3.59, so I thought, what the heck, at that price, I'll give it a try. Its price was less than a cup of good coffee at Starbucks.

The mascara came in four shades: blackest black (which I purchased), charcoal, soft black, and brown.

I should have saved my money for that Starbucks coffee. I was terribly disappointed in this Revlon mascara. Its very name, "luxurious lengths", is so far off base that it's ludicrous. Up until my purchase, I had been using a Maybelline mascara that was really pretty good, but was bordering on being completely used up. (It was one of those mascara products that have two brushes: one to fluff out your lashes first, and one to apply the mascara to those already-fluffed up lashes.) For $3.59, "Luxurious Lengths" would be an experiment - and one that miserably failed.

The tube of mascara itself is actually quite pretty: a single pewter-colored cylinder with a gold "Revlon" band where the tube separates. The dual-brush mascara that I had been using was, unfortunately, kind of bulky and never did fit as well as I'd hoped it would in a cosmetic bag.

The Revlon product in the single tube measures 4 1/2 inches total length overall. The packaging itself for the mascara was so nondescript that I just tossed it as soon as I opened up the plastic part that held the tube. (None of your little 'frills' like you get from, say, Chanel, MAC, Dior, Clinique or other 'designer' brands where the mascara is packaged in an actual little box.)

The only promise that this particular brand of Revlon mascara makes IN WRITING is that it is 'waterproof'. (We'll find out later as I shed a tear or two or three when I toss this product into the trash can!) The name "Luxurious Lengths" itself is very, very misleading. For the first round of applying the mascara, it's literally barely there.

I found myelf having to apply at least three coats (usually more, after waiting a couple of minutes between coats), to even get a semblance that I had actually applied mascara. Even after at least three coats of this product, I still feel ripped off - and I look like I barely have any mascara on at all.

Perhaps if you're going for a very, very light look with your lashes - if they're already thick and full - and you just want to add maybe a bit more color or shine to great lashes, you might want to consider this product. Also, because it is so 'light' and almost nonexistent, I would think that women who don't like a 'heavy', made-up look to their eyes would like this product as well.

The fact that it is allegedly also 'waterproof' would appeal to some women as well, especially if they swim, exercise or take part in any sports. As light as this mascara is, you'll probbably never even know if it's still there or not! All it does is add just a hint of color and shine to your lashes. For women who have a hard time wearing most cosmetics because of allergies or irritation, you might want to check this product out for yourself, again because it's barely there.

It does not, in any way, shape or form, lengthen them. Don't be misled by a product entitled "Luxurious Lashes" thinking that it will add volume or fullness to your own lashes, at least in the case of this Revlon product. And at $3.59, you really do get what you paid for!

As for myself, I have to head back to the grocery store today to pick up some laundry detergent, fresh eggs and a bag or two of spinach. While I'm there, I might as well check out their cosmetics department to see what else they might now have on sale...but this time, and the next and the next, I think I'll be a little more cautious of what seems to be a pretty good deal.

  • The name "Luxurious Lashes" couldn't be further from the truth with this product.
  • It could appeal to women who swim, exercise or play a lot of sports, since it's so very light.
  • Because it's so light, it might be a good product for women who may be allergic to heavier mascaras.
This item was on clearance for $3.59 - and now I think I know why!
