For many generations, the quarterback position has been one of the most toughest positions to play in the NFL. Players not only find it difficult to adapt to the position but also find it difficult to mentally challenge it. It is in fact one of the many positions that players find themselves accountable to what they would do on the field. But the quarterback position is one of the most complicated positions in all of sports.
Whenever you think of quarterbacks, you think of Peyton Manning or Tom Brady. Or you could even go old-school and think Bart Starr or Joe Namath, but that is just the beginning. These influential quarterbacks lead the way to a new generation of games and excitement. Whether you cheered for your respective team, the quarterback position is one worth cheering for. And sometimes it can be ugly in some occassions. Whether your team may have the best quarterback or not, everyone can agree that the quarterback position is one not too miss. But is it???
If there is one franchise that separates quarterbacks from any other team is the Chicago Bears. The Bears have been around for nearly 88 years and counting. They are one of the few charter members in the NFL and lead way to future achievements along the way. With their merger in the early 20's, their success was unparallel. And in 1921, their official name was the Chicago Staleys(in an agreement between Geaorge Halas and Edward Sternaman) which on that year they won the NFL championship. And in the next year(1922), they changed their name to the Chicago Bears. But it wasn't the quarterback position that recognize their success, it was their effort. The bears are one of the few teams in the league that revolutionize how football was played. But speaking of the quarterback position, the Bears may not have the best throwing arms in the league.
If you want to know who is the most successful quarterback in Bears history, you might think Jim McMahon. He was one of the interesting characters in the football league and he showed it. But he only gave them one title in his span. So, who is another quarterback that may have better success??? Sid Luckman. Sid Luckman was the bears quarterback in the 40's and never couldv'e asked for more. He lead his team to four out of the five NFL championships that his team appeared in. From 1940-1947, Sid Luckman led the bears to numerous titles and gave a new nickname to the bears...."Monsters of the Midway". Sid Luckman's success is unparallel compared to future quarterbacks after him. He still holds records for passing yards in the bears franchise and the only quarterback with major success with the team. Jim McMahon and Sid Luckman are two bear icons that never get off the minds of bear fans. But there is another quarterback who is trying to prove that he is the next Sid Luckman, and that quarterback is Rex Grossman.
One thing Chicago fans will understand is that the quarterback position is one hard to find. The last quarterback to have success with us was Jim McMahon and the next after is Sid Luckman. Two quarterbacks in the last 80+ years have produced in this franchise and had success. So, what are the chances for Rex Grossman??? Rex Grossman is one those quarterbacks that Chicago fans have been dying for. With his performance in 2006, his success was matching those of Jim McMahon and Sid Luckman. He gave the Bears their first NFC championship since 1985 and was the first quarterback to win 10+ games since the 80's. Rex Grossman did look like the future but for how long????
If there is one thing Chicago fans can get used to, is the quarterback position. With our many failures to pick a legit quarterback over many decades, Rex Grossman seemed like the answer. But when he (Rex Grossman) started struggling, Chicago fans reminded themselves who they are. And in some games in 2006, there was no exception. Posting quarterback ratings as low as my SAT, Rex Grossman sooner or later would find out how life is in Chicago. And Chicago fans couldn't bare to see how he would challenge himself mentally and physically. Therefore, Chicago fans were getting anxious to how their quarterback would play. And that's something Chicago fans couldn't bare to see. Rex Grossman might bee a good player but for how long???
Rex Grossman came from a well-respected University(Florida) and he accepted the role as quarterback for the bears. And a couple years later, Chicago fans are still anticipating whether he will have success or not. Rex knows that his job is not going to get easy but he understands the work that needs to be done. He may not be the next Jim McMahom or Sid Luckman but he is definitely another quarterback in the history books. For many decades, Chicago fans have been dying to have their Bart Starr or Tom Brady but it seems like they still have to wait. It's not a matter of competition but consistency. And that's what Chicago fans hope it will happen. If there is one thing that Rex can do is justify his case and performances. Rex Grossman may not be the next Jim McMahon or Sid Luckman, why??? Because he is the quarterback of the Chicago Bears.

Post a CommentGrossman is good enough to be a starter and obviously plays well enough to keep them in the hunt. My question about him is can he like a Manning or Brady carry his team when they need to put points on the board?
