Rex Rabbit: Guide to the Standard Rex and the Mini Rex

Elisia Yun
The Rex Rabbit is quite a common and popular rabbit breed for pet keepers. There are two different kinds of Rex Rabbits: the standard and the mini. The Rex Rabbits are quite popular breeds as well.

Much like many popular rabbits, the Rex Rabbit is most commonly treasured because of their beautiful, velvety fur. They are also popular in the fur trade. Luckily for the Rex Rabbits, since the 1980's they are less bred for their fur in the fur markets because it is easier to take fur from other breeds of rabbits than from the Rex Rabbits; however, their fur is still rather gorgeous, and rather popular. They used to be popular for their meat as well; however, this is less common nowadays because the Flemish Giant Rabbit has much more meat on them than the Rex Rabbits, and have become more popular. This makes pet keeping as most popular for Rex Rabbits.

Rex Rabbits come in many beautiful colors like Blue, Amber, Black, Lilac, Opal, Red and white, and in also many marking styles like Broken, and California. Their coat is extremely beautiful, but requires very minimal grooming which makes them quite favorable and loved. Breeders love to breed Rex Rabbits for their various colors. Rex Rabbits are also average sized rabbits, and they will generally weigh from seven to eleven pounds.

Generally, Rex Rabbits are good-tempered and well-mannered. They are also known to be maternal rabbits, and will accept the young of other rabbits, and raise them to their adult stage. They are relatively calm, and do very well as pets. Compared to other rabbits, they may be more laid-back, and relaxed. They are also rather gentle by nature, and love company of humans other animals!

The Mini Rex, on the other hand, is just a mini sized rabbit of the Rex Rabbits. They will weigh only about three to five pounds. Compared to the standard-sized Rex Rabbits, they are quite smaller in size. Just like the standard-sized rabbits, they possess beautiful-looking fur coats, and are pretty well-tempered; however, they generally tend to be slightly more active, and are a bit more fragile. Because of this, standard-sized Rex Rabbits are more commonly recommended as pets - especially for children although the mini-sized Rex Rabbits are still a favourite!

Both breeds of Rex Rabbits make great house-pets as they are easily toilet-trained, and enjoy the company of humans; thus, make great companions. They are fun to have around, and are described as having a cat-like personality.

Agree with other commenter. Standard Rex is not only a great rabbit for meat and fur but is better than Flemish giant for both purposes. Flemish giant was meant to be a meat breed, but the ratio of bone to meat is too high to be considered a good choice for meat.

The Standard Rex rabbit is actually a great rabbit for fur AND meat. The Flemish giant is a much bigger rabbit but the meat to bone ratio is far less desirable than the Standard Rex. New Zealand and California are two types of rabbit used mostly for meat. The Rex has a dual purpose as nit just a meat rabbit but a great source of wonderfully soft fur.
