Having lived in Seoul for six months, I can attest to how effective the Korean subway system is. As a foreigner who would like to explore the city as much as I could, renting a car isn't a good option, not only because it's expensive, but also because it's not as fast as using the subway. Some people prefer using the bus especially when going to places nearer the bus station than the subway station. Some ride the subway first, get down to the nearest bus station, then ride a bus going to their final destination. Others ride the subway or bus first, then get down somewhere near their destination. They either ride a taxi or walk their way to the place they need to go.
