Rice Bowl Cheddar Broccoli Rice - Food Review

Lisa Riggs
My younger daughter loves rice. She frequently asks me to make this side dish several times during the week. I am always on the prowl for new and tasty rice products that will offer a bit of variety to our evening meals. I recently spotted Rice Bowl Cheddar Broccoli Rice on a shopping trip and decided to give this inexpensive side a try.

This rice is offered in a five point seven ounce package that contains two and a half servings. The price of this item is only ninety nine cents. Even when doubling the amount for a dinner for four, it is still a great bargain. Two packages of this side costs only two dollars which averages out to fifty cents a person. Of course if you are only cooking for one or two, one package of Rice Bowl Cheddar Broccoli is adequate.

The front of the package shows a tasty looking rice dish with plenty of cheese and bits of broccoli. This flavor combination is very popular and for very good reason. Cheddar cheese goes wonderfully with broccoli and has the extra perk of encouraging fussy eaters to eat meals that contain this nutritious vegetable.

Preparation of this rice dish is so very simple and can be easily accomplished by even the youngest members of the family. This flavored rice can be cooked in either the microwave or on the stove. For the traditional method, bring two cups of water to a nice boil on the stove top and along with one tablespoon of butter or margarine and the entire contents of the package. After boiling over a medium heat for approximately seven minutes, the rice should be tender. The covered pot should be removed from the heat source and allowed to sit for several minutes to allow the sauce to thicken. If choosing to prepare Rice Bowl Cheddar Broccoli Rice in the microwave, simply combine the contents of the package with two and one quarter cups of water and one tablespoon of butter in a one and one half quart casserole pan or bowl that is safe for this method of cooking. After cooking on High for twelve to fourteen minutes, stir the rice dish and then remove from the oven. Again, allow the sauce to thicken for a few minutes before serving.

One half cup of this rice dish prepared contains two hundred and seventy calories. There is one point five grams of Total fat and one percent of Cholesterol. Those consumers who strictly follow a low Sodium diet should note that this product contains a whopping seven hundred and eighty milligrams of Salt. There is also one gram of Dietary Fiber, four grams of Sugar and seven grams of Protein per serving. On the plus side, each half cup contains six percent of Vitamin A, eight percent of Vitamin C, six percent of Calcium. Additionally, there is ten percent of the daily recommended value of Iron and twenty five percent of Folic Acid.

Rice Bowl Cheddar Broccoli Rice is definitely tasty. The rice cooked up perfectly and contained a great deal of both broccoli and cheese flavor. All of my family enjoyed this side dish immensely. While I consider this packaged rice to be a great bargain and can certainly shave some money off the monthly food budget, the amount of Sodium contained in this product makes this one that I would only purchase on an occasional basis.

Yikes, that is a bit high on the salt, isn't it?
