Rich Mullins

My Favorite Christian Artist

Carla Raley
When I became a conservative Christian, finding good, quality music to listen to was a little hard at first, but I soon found recording artist Rich Mullins. His songs really touched what I was feeling, and he has remained my favorite, even after his death in a car accident a few years back. Here are my favorite ten songs by him, along with my reasons why:

1. Step By Step
This is my all time favorite. The chorus of "Oh, God, you are my God, and I will ever praise you!" makes my heart soar everytime I hear it. I also like the phrase "On this road to righteousness, sometimes the climb can be so steep, I may falter in my steps, but never beyond your reach."

2. I Believe
This is the apostle's creed, which my husband said was always recited in the Methodist church he grew up in as a young boy. It just puts the whole thing in a nutshell.

3. Everywhere I Go, I See You.
The swelling music in this one is so powerful.

4. That Where I Am, There You May Also Be
This one is a fun cheerful song. A little sad, too, as it was not finished before Rich Mullins died, so several artist got together and did the background music to Rich's voice.

5. Here In America
Another cheerful song, I think. I really like the line "For I know the thirsty listen, and down to the waters come." I remember that feeling so well when I first became a Christian. I could not get enough of reading my Bible and listening to preaching.

6. Sing Your Praise to the Lord
A lively, worshipful song, that makes you want to raise your hands and SING!

7. One Thing
I like the line from the sciptures "Who have I in Heaven but you Jesus?" I like to learn songs, and later see the words in the Bible by surprise. This was a scripture I was not familar with, and I was excited the first time I heard it read, and realized it had already spoke to me in a song!

8. Awesome God
I have almost heard this one so much, I've gotten tired of it, but if I can go a while without hearing it, I always enjoy it again!

9. Screen Door on a Submarine
My children always like this one. It's an acapella song, which makes it fun.

10. My Deliever
Another song where Rich died before he was able to finish up, but you can hear him sing it on the Jesus CD. It's a beautiful, powerful song.

I cannot recommend any song by Rich Mullins highly enough. There have been very few things he's ever recorded that I did not like.

I love Rich Mullins' music, and it was unbelievable to me when he was killed. Another great loss to Christian music, as was Keith Green back in the 80's.

Just before Rich died, his song "Elijah" was getting alot of airplay on the radio......I always thought that was quite ironic, like maybe he had a premonition that he would not be here much longer. The line "It won't break my heart to say goodbye" has always stood out to me. I love that song!

Great article and a wonderful tribute to such a talented artist.
