Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes Addressed the Elephants in the Room

What Happens when You Don't Kiss Butt

Comedian Ricky Gervais hosted the Golden Globes for 2010 and again in 2011, but rumor has it that if some stars get their way, Gervais won't host it in 2012. The 49-year-old Gervais displayed his style of dry humor that is nothing less than brutal. Sparing no punches, he took shots at Charlie Sheen, the movie "The Tourist," the ladies of "Sex and the City," John Travolta, Hugh Hefner, the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, among others.

But the thing is, the ladies of "Sex and the City" do happen to be middle-aged

As reported at Yahoo News, said actor Robert Downey Jr. on Gervais, while at the Golden Globes, "Aside from the fact that it's been hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones, I'd say the vibe of the show has been pretty good so far, wouldn't you?"

Mean-spirited or honest? While Gervais let them have it, he often did it with his jacket off and a drink in hand - as casual as he could be.

Gervais is none too popular right now, with some members of Hollywood, because he is not afraid to make a joke of the truth. That poster for "Sex and the City" has, most likely, been airbrushed. Charlie Sheen does have a substance abuse problem. Robert Downey Jr. used to be a drug addict. John Travolta is probably gay.

Some members of Hollywood would prefer you ignore the elephants in the room. They're used to being kings and queens and you don't dishoner "royalty." Gervais took shots at the stars in 2010 and again in 2011, but many would say that in 2011, he was even more brutal.

Tom Hanks and Tim Allen presented an award together, but before they got to the nominations, said Tom Hanks, "We recall when Ricky Gervais was a slightly chubby but very kind comedian."

Tim Allen added, "Neither of which he is now."

Hanks and Allen, who are both actors but also comedians, may go for the family-friendly humor, but Gervais never has. Yes, Gervais is slimmer now, but his brand of humor is well known. Furthermore, Gervais' brand of humor is not novel. There are plenty of successful comedians, such as Joan Rivers, who don't feel the need to kiss butt.

Actors may feel the need to diss Ricky Gervais because they're feelings are hurt, but fans know how much of a comic genius Gervais is. According to Flicks News, "The Ricky Gervais Podcast is downloaded an average of 4.54 million times a month. That's about 55 million downloads a year and over a million per week."

Some of the stars wore their big kid panties and took it all in stride

Not every star in attendance, when Ricky Gervais hosted the Golden Globes 2011, had harsh words for Gervais. Said Jim Parsons, who won a Golden Globe for his performance in "The Big Bang Theory," "He started with a bang and went right for the jugular. It was great! I thought he was really funny. It's like he walked up to the edge, and then he jumped right on over and didn't look back. I was scandalized, I tell you. I think he's hilarious and funny and whenever you're funny, you're gonna push some people's buttons. I thought he was hilarious, but I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end, I can tell you that. I was laughing while thinking, 'Oh, God. Not me, never me.'"

@Pat - There's an Associated Content writer who loves to lump Americans in one negative category. It's an ignorant thing to do. I don't lump Brits in one category, and I like Gervais.

Brilliant analysis... despite being donkeys politically, there are more untouchable elephants in Hollywood.
