Rid Your Home of Diaper Odor Naturally

Harold Dean Sink
Diaper odor has to be the worst smell to linger in a room only then to travel through one's home or business. There are a slew of products on the market to choose from, and some I could not find online. One of the cheapest and quickest ways to get rid of it is to pull out your air filter(s) and attach one of those scented pads that are made for the air filter.

You can find these in any Home Depot or Lowe's in the same area as the air filters. The one of the more refreshing scents is gardenia. The first time I used one of these was in a business to keep the bathrooms with changing tables smelling good.

Granted, I don't have children of my own, but my experience in cleaning churches, office buildings and homes has allowed me to learn of all sorts of ways to keep diaper odor from taking over the place.

Candles and Incense

Personally, I do not recommend using candles or incense to cover or mask diaper odor. You may get distracted and cause a fire.

Limes and Lemons

Setting out halved or quartered limes and lemons in a bowl will pull the scent into them, and at the same time spread a nice aroma into the home. I have never quite understood the physics of this, but it does work.

Fragrant Indoor Flowers

Growing fragrant flowers such as lavender and lily of the valley indoors will also help in ridding your home of diaper odors. This works even better if you use natural charcoal in with the soil. Check your local gardener to see if they still have these plants available.

Burpee always has the lavender seed for sale online, and Michigan Bulb has lily of the valley for sale at certain times of the year. When you get them, read the instructions on when to plant them.

Natural Plant Oils

A really effective way to rid your room and home of diaper odor is to use eucalyptus or mint oil in a small bowl. Set it on top of the bureau to be out of the way. You can buy one of those tiny salsa bowls and pour a little bit of oil into it. These aromas fill the room quickly and neutralize the air.

You can try other oils, but these two work really well. I have tried cinnamon and sandalwood oils and they are just too musky around a baby. Make sure you and your baby aren't allergic to eucalyptus because there are many Americans that who have a natural allergic reaction to it.

Essential oil.com is a good source for natural oils, but if you look around your area you may find a store that sells these natural products.

Baking Soda

Some parents are die-hard Arm and Hammer's baking soda users to rid a room of diaper odors. It does a really good job, but you need to leave the open container in the room for a while and then throw it out.

Ammonia

My mother told me that she used ammonia to clean cloth diapers to get rid of the odor. The chemical release into the air also neutralizes the odor. I would recommend Arm & Hammer's brand on this, too.

Open Windows and Use Fans

The only other thing I can recommend to ridding your home of diaper odor is to open windows and have two small box fans at opposite ends of the home. One fan needs to blow inwards while the other blows out. Any brand of fan will do, and if they are on sale you may be able to get both for less than $20.

  • Natural Plant Oils are excellent at wiping out odors.
  • Ammonia counteracts with the diaper odor in a home.
  • Baking soda is mostly used in absorbing diaper oders.
Indoor potted plants with natural charcoal mixed in the soil will filter the air in your home. Adding a frangrant flower will naturally take care of the diaper odors, it just may not take care of it quick enough for you.

Good suggestions, Harold. It can't be as bad as cleaning out a cat's litter tray though, can it?!! Cat odours are awful.
