Ride the Toy Train at Sayaji Park in Vadodara in India

Taru Mehta
There are many attractions for all ages, from 5 years to 80 years in the city of Vadodara in Gujarat State of India. Beautiful Sayaji garden has thousands of visitors all staying at Vadodara and also from all over the country. The lush green garden is spread out over 20 acresin the middle of the city of Vadodara. This garden was originally known as Kamati garden during the famous Gaikwad rulers. I have stayed at this cultural center in India for about 25 years, I am aware of even smallest detail and all of the entertainment opportunities available within this lovely garden. The ride on the toy train in the garden is the most memorable way for kids under 10 to have fun.

This toy train originally belonged to the Royal Gaikwad family, rulers of Vadodara. And all young children of royal family were using this beautiful train. This toy train was donated by the Gaikwad family to the city of Vadodara before 50 years in the year 1958. It was decided to run this train here at Sayaji Garden. This toy train is the most beautiful train, having 5 small carriages, which are around 4 feet high. There are doors that open sidewise by pushing. This lovely train is driven by the black steam engine, very similar to the real steam engines but its mini replica. This lovely train can accommodate 52 children in all. This train takes a complete round of the Sayaji garden in around 40 minutes of time. The children can see almost entire zoo during the joy ride of this most beautiful toy train. There are two railway stations made for this lovely train. The first station from which the train starts its 40 minute long journey is named as Ajayab ghar. This railway station is made exactly in the same way as any real railway station, which is having the ticket window, the tea stalls, water hut, the benches to sit, the signal arrangement, the announcement system, and the platform. The children are really excited to see this proto type railway station. They purchase their own ticket and wait for their turn to sit in the train. I myself have also set in this lovely train before around 50 years in the year 1960 when I was only 10 years old. The train comes on the station at specified time and all the ticket holder children are allowed to board this train. They have to sit on the small benches provided in each carriage. If you are around 6 feet tall, the top roof of this train will remain two feet below your head. The train starts its journey from Ajayab ghar station by giving the three whistles like regular train.

The train passes through the complete garden, giving a real enjoyable view of the zoo and the entire Sayaji garden. The train stops at the station of Pankhi nagar on the way for five minutes, where the tickets of all the children are checked by the staff. The train starts its second half of journey and reaches back the Ajayab ghar station, thus completing its forty minutes long journey. This toy train takes 6 trips daily starting its first trip at 3 pm. The yard of this toy train is also made in the similar way of the real yard. The width of the tracks of this toy train is one feet. This toy train ride is working on all weekdays except on Thursdays. There is no advance booking facility for this ride. And the tickets are issued on first come first served basis everyday. There is a heavy rush of the children to enjoy the joy ride of this beautiful train, mainly on holidays and Sundays. The ticket for the lovely joy ride of this train is Rs.20 (fifty cents) per head. The children, who are less than 10 years old and having height of maximum 42 inches, are allowed to enjoy this train ride. I have traveled through almost complete world, but the fun I had in the joy ride of this toy train is one of the most memorable one in my entire life.

I am very confident that the young children grown up here at the USA, who have perhaps visited many most modern and attractive joy rides of America, would also love this train ride as it resembles very closely to the real experience of travel in real train driven by old type of steam engine. I would strongly suggest all my AC friends, mainly Indians belonging to Gujarat State to arrange the memorable joy ride in this toy train for their children at Vadodara in the Gujarat State of India. However, just make sure in advance that this toy train is in operating condition on the day of your visit as this unique toy train has some stoppages due to the maintenance problems.
