Riding the Rays

Susan Elliott
He left his ring on the table
before he walked out the back door.
He'd threatened
this was coming,
but she never knew for sure.

Strangely,
the tears never fell from her eyes.
The world didn't seem colder,
even with this last good-bye.

Now she's waiting at the train station,
wondering what lies a head
Life, love and honesty
a gentle touch, a warm bed?

Life always turns
but in the blink of an eye
dreams wash away
with a glance, with a sigh.

With her man gone, she opens the door
on a long forgotten past
running wild, running free,
and running fast.

Chasing down rainbows,
she rides their rays.
Living fully each moment,
embracing each day.

Once, he returned
like he had before
stood outside, hollow,
pounding the door.

His knock, never answered.
He stood there alone.
She had finally found herself,
and it wasn't at home.
