Right Guard Deodorant - Moisture Protection that Defies the Odds

Caitlin Seida
I live in a house with two males. Contrary to the stereotypes, they have more bath and beauty products than I do. I have one simple can of deodorant and antiperspirant in the bathroom. They have endless sticks and sprays and gadgets designed to do who knows what. One constant product in our household bathroom is Right Guard deodorant.

Let me tell you a funny story about Right Guard deodorant, which is probably the best testament to the moisture control provided by this product that anyone could possibly think of. A stick of Right Guard deodorant endured two weeks of running water and harsh conditions - in my sink drain.

At first the sink was draining slowly. I chalked it up to the guys in the household forgetting that hair does not go down the sink. I used a mixture of vinegar and baking soda, a solution that cures almost every clogged drain in the home. No deal. The clog got worse. It took an hour or more to drain.

After using all manner of caustic products and a drain auger, we were stumped. The only recourse left to rescue our poor drain from uncertain failure was to take apart the pipes underneath the sink. And we did.

Much to our surprise, there, lodged in the P-trap of the drain, was a neatly honed stick of Right Guard deodorant. At some point or another, my husband's deodorant had broken and fallen down the drain. Chalk it up to not knowing much about plumbing, but he didn't think this would cause a problem at the time. Deodorant does dissolve, right?

Wrong. Two weeks of running water, two weeks of drain unclogging products and two weeks of general wear and tear and the stick of Right Guard deodorant came out of that nasty, disgusting, clogged drain as fresh as the day it had gone in. The stick was fully intact, and still smelled faintly of deodorant fragrance.

I can say that after this unorthodox test, I am convinced of Right Guard's staying power and moisture control. I will not be repeating this test any time soon with other deodorants, because I don't think my sink drain would thank me. But my husband will be using Right Guard deodorant almost exclusively from this point forward - our hardship made a believer out of him.

There are several varieties of Right Guard deodorant available on the market as of 2010,. Right Guard Xtreme Deodorant and Antiperspirant is the product of choice in our household, as evidenced by the miraculous feats described above. A 2.6 ounce stick retails for approximately $4 at most pharmacies and big box stores.

In addition to the staying power and moisture control properties exhibited by Right Guard Xtreme, it has a pleasant, fresh scent that is unobtrusive and nearly unnoticeable unless smelled up close. I know what it took to make a believer out of my family that this is a quality product - the experiment and results are easy to replicate in your own home, but I wouldn't recommend it!
