Rihanna - Rated R - Album Review

Dan Rozak
The fourth studio album from pop superstar Rihanna entitled, "Rated R," is a collection of 13 songs depicting attitude, confidence, and heartbreak. From beginning to end the listener is taken on an emotional rollercoaster as an edgier and more mature Rihanna reveals a darker side to herself than she has ever done before.

From the very beginning with the track, "Mad House," you can tell this is going to be a different album with a dark hinge to it. "Russian Roulette," the first single from album, captures the dark image portrayed throughout the whole album and makes the listener ask what is really going on with lyrics like, "As my life flashes before my eyes, I'm wondering will I ever see another sunrise? So many won't get the chance to say goodbye, but it's too late to think of the value of my life."

"Hard," featuring Jeezy will be the 2nd single and is in your face with an infectious drum loop that you can't help but move along to. By far the track with the most swagger is, "ROCKSTAR 101." As a confidence-boosting anthem, it oozes attitude.

Positives

A different edgy Rihanna brings a more unique sound than the mainstream pop factory.

A ton of emotion is displayed throughout and can be really felt the first time one listens.

Negatives

The album moves slow at times with tracks like, "Stupid Love," which sounds like the same post-breakup song that's been repeated a million times.

Doesn't contain any big hits that are going to bring in any real commercial success.

Summary

Rihanna's fourth studio album has the theme of a troubled relationship and reflects the pain of going through a break up.

It is not really a single packed commercial album, but the album does have flow and appeals to many in regards to the relationship issues that are addressed.

Overall, the most fashionable entertainer in the industry today produces one of the hippest albums of the year. The collection has some good songs, but nothing spectacular. "Rated R," gets a 3 out of 5.
