Rihanna makes some catchy guilty pleasure listening music and I enjoy her accent. I listened to the extended version of her 2011 album "Talk That Talk" and found it to be a hit and miss work with singles I'm sure I'll listen to in the future, but never lay any dollars down for. In terms of whether or not one should shell out some extra dough for the three extra songs, or stick to the basic package, I would say: basic. The three extra songs did not add any grandeur. My song by song thoughts and notes are below.
"You're Da One": An R & B song that is filled with the swagger of Rihanna's accent and oddly enough seems to be a play on the ole "This Land Is Your Land" song, giving it a slight middle school kid song vibe. It's interesting though.
"Where Have You Been": A dance track that dabbles in fun, but for me always feels like something winding up and never driving home into a climax. Crank it and get loose, but not a masterpiece by any means.
"We Found Love": It's a 90s rave with a glint of 80s and some of that electro dance magic that has propelled acts like LMAFO to the top of the entertainment bill. Rihanna adds some romantic emotion to the mix, however, and what on first listen was monotonous to me has become an addictive piece of candy upon repeated listens.
"Talk That Talk": A yeah boy talk to me R& B song that hits the usual beats and adds Jay Z in for some rap lines. The beat itself is slightly more interesting than the actual lyrics, with "counting" becoming a part of it, "one, two, three, four" pop singers sometimes let Kindergarten kids write their songs.
"Cockiness(Love It)": A distorted session of sexual innuendo and straight out sexual references. It's got some fun soundbite qualities to it, but mostly it is a pointless mess.
"Birthday Cake": Mmmm I'll take a piece. This is another song I don't have much use for in a listen to again sense. There is some guilty pleasure in hearing Rihanna be a bit naughty and saying some naughty words.
"We All Want Love": It feels kind of "American Idol" finale song like. It goes for an inspirational we all can connect and identify with each other ala common ground in our hearts stuff. It should be a radio single, but I hate most of what I hear on the radio so figure that into my thoughts on it.
"Drunk On Love": If you like Rihanna from previous records you should like this song. She is belting out with her pop star X Factor. The background music is a soft pop smoky room perfect for an 80s style video synth and chant ballad. She makes it work.
"Roc Me Out": It feel generic, yet cool all at once. Rihanna has captured cool, bottled it, spread it thin, and still managed to make it smell, er, sound good.
"Watch 'n Learn": It's a roc in your spot pop song that feels 90s girl band with some Jackson 5 inflections that get dropped to the floor with thick bass. However, I am not going to allow myself to be won over this time. I will not be seduced into giving it a glowing review. This song is just there.
"Farewell": A song that feels like it should strike some note in the heart with power and honestly if Pink were singing it I think it would have carried me further. As is, it's too polished, too Hallmark.
"Red Lipstick": It's the dark, bad girl at play here, and it's not as slick as it could be, but it could have been a nice replacement for a couple of the other songs on the base album.
"Do Ya Thang": She's okay with a dude checking out other chicks and some other blah, blah, blah. Boring song.
"Fool In Love": A fall flat pop song that aches to have been a rock ballad. Lots of bad sounds in play with the music and Rihanna doesn't hit the notes very pretty. This is a song geared more towards a female listener in terms of lyrics overall.
