Rihanna's Top Ten Songs...So Far!

John Myers
Rihanna is one of the most prolific recording artists in the field today. With five top ten albums, 15 top ten singles (and three more as a featured guest performer) and millions of records sold, this young lady has proven herself to be a bona fide force in the music industry. Her latest set, "Loud," has already produced two #1 singles ('Only Girl (In the World)' and 'What's My Name?') and a third ('S&M') currently sits at #2 on Billboard's Hot 100 Chart.

Robin Rihanna Fenty was born in St. Michael, Barbados in 1988. She moved to the US at the age of 16 to pursue a career in the recording industry, where she was signed to Def Jam Recordings, a label which was then run by rapper Jay Z. In the six years since reaching the #2 spot on the Billboard charts with her debut single, 'Pon De Replay,' Rihanna has amassed a catalog of sometimes thoughtful, oftentimes dance and pop-friendly tunes. Here are my picks for Rihanna's top ten songs so far:

#10 - SOS

This #1 single from 2006 sampled the musical track from the 1981 Soft Cell tune, 'Tainted Love,' and the singer's island-style vocals gave the sample a whole new sound and made this one a smash. Check out the video for 'S.O.S.' here.

#9 - Disturbia

Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum

This irresistible vocalized melody opens this song about being in a state of mental anguish. This dance-friendly song off of the singer's "Good Girl Gone Bad" album charted at #1 in 2008 and sold more than 4 million copies in the US alone. Watch the video for 'Disturbia' here.

#8 - Rehab

This mid-tempo ballad is tender and sad. Though it didn't fare as well as some of the singer's other hits (the song peaked at #18 on the Billboard charts), its melodic quality and well-written lyrics make this one of Rihanna's best songs. Check out the video for 'Rehab' here.

#7 - Pon De Replay

Come Mr. deejay, song pon de replay

Come Mr. deejay won't you turn the music up

This infectious dance song was Rihanna's very first single off her debut album "Music of the Sun." The song peaked at #2 and introduced the world to the singer's irresistible island flavor. Check out the video for "Pon De Replay" right here.

#6 - Take a Bow

This defiant ballad, co-written by R&B singer Ne Yo, was the fifth single off of the album "Good Girl Gone Bad." The song hit #1 in 2008 and it's one of Rihanna's best! Check out the video for 'Take a Bow' right here.

#5 - S&M

S&M is Rihanna's latest single off of the "Loud" CD and is a fast and furious dance track. Check it the very catchy song right here.

#4 - Te Amo

This song, off of Rihanna's 2009 "Rated R" set, tackles an unusual circumstance, that of the singer being the object of another woman's affection. Check out the lyrics:

Te amo, te amo she says to me
I hear the pain in her voice..
then we danced underneath the candelabra
she takes the lead
that's when I saw it in her eyes, it's over

Then she said te amo
then she put her hand around me waist
I told her no, she cried te amo...

I said te amo,
wish somebody'd tell me what she said?
Don't it mean I love you
Think it means I love you

The song was never released as a single here in the US, but there's a certain sad quality to it that's very appealing. Watch the video for 'Te Amo' here.

#3 - Don't Stop the Music

'Don't Stop the Music' is one of those straight up, fun dance tunes that's great fun in any club. Check out the video right here.

#2 - Umbrella

Out of all of the songs in Rihanna's catalog, this one's by far the catchiest! C'mon, sing along...

When the sun shines we'll shine together

I told you I'd be here forever...

'Umbrella' was one of the singer's biggest hits and features guest vocals by Jay Z. Check out the video here.

#1 - Only Girl (In the World)

My choice for Rihanna's best song so far is one of her latest smashes. 'Only Girl in the World' is another one of those irresistibly catchy dance anthems that's still packing dance floors everywhere seven months after its release. Check out this wonderful tune right here.

So there are my choices for Rihanna's top ten songs so far. Clearly, Rihanna is one of the hottest stars in the music world today and there's no doubt that there's a lot more to come from this talented young singer. In just a short period of time she's amassed a quality collection of fine songs that have been enjoyed by millions of fans throughout the world. I'm sure others will have their own opinions about their favorite Rihanna tunes. If there are other songs you would have changed or substituted on the list, please leave a comment, and thanks for reading!
