At First Night Charlotte, that is. The festival in Charlotte, North Carolina marks the passage of time with song, dance and art, as the old year fades away and the new one begins. This family oriented and alcohol-free event offers a safe and friendly environment for festival goers.
First Night Kids kicks off the festival at 3 p.m. December 31st at Imaginon, a combination library and children's theatre in downtown Charlotte. Kids receive the star treatment for four hours, as they listen to music and watch a variety of performances.
There will be plenty of acts and entertainment to occupy the big kids, er, adults, as well. From 8 to 11 p.m., all are welcome to pass the evening away with bands, magic shows and dancing. Take part in the festivities by writing or drawing your new year's resolution on the Transformation Tree, a creation by artist Shaun Cassidy. You'll find this enriching experience in the parking lot at 300 South Tryon Street.
You'll also want to visit Charlotte Comedy Theater sometime between 8:30 and 11 p.m. for fun and entertaining shows. The venue, located on N. Davidson Street, is a comedy improv theater and training center combined.
If you have a talent and would rather participate than watch, First Night Charlotte is still looking for performers. Whether you're a musician, magician or juggler, First Night Charlotte is interested in you if you can put on a show.
You can also volunteer to help transform Charlotte into an "artistic playground" if you're 18 years or older.
Pressed for time? No worries, you don't have to volunteer for the whole time--just put in a couple of hours here and there.
Finale and countdown to 2011 begin at 11:30 p.m.
