People always have their phones with them, and downloading music onto them has become a huge business. This is creating an entire new outlook. One performer said they were going to try to make their future songs catchier so they could reach this mass of buyers as well. He was not aware of the popularity of ringtones. Over ten percent of music revenue now comes from downloaded cell phone music choices.
The Black Eyes Peas were one of the groups awarded with this plaque for their popular song "My Humps", while Rick Ross a rapper, Beyonce and 50 Cent were others who received the award as well. Brittney Spear's "Toxic", Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", and AC/DC's "Back in Black" were also awarded. Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" reached platinum status just recently. It comes from her comeback effort "Emancipation of MiMi". The ringtone songs can be downloaded in either of two ways, as the original recording or it can be digitized into an instrumental.
Ringtones are a way that teens identify themselves. They can choose a different song for each person on their list. By personalizing their phones, they are socializing and vocalizing their identity. There are vast amount of services that offer ringtones in every style and sound. Make sure your phone is compatible to the ringtones you are downloading. Some companies such as Verizon let you sign onto their network and order them directly through the phone on their "Get It" service.
The Recording Industry Association of America and Cellular Communication and Internet Association gave out the awards. "Master Ringtones" signifies that the song awarded comes from an original recording by the artist that has gone Gold or Platinum. Digitized music is a representation of those songs.
The event of awarding these songs took place on June 14, 2006. Billboard was present during the awards ceremony as well. The event took place in New York at The Time Warner Center. Numerous musicians were on-site to receive their awards.
