Riots at Miami Edison Senior High School

Students Riot, School is in Lock Down

Susan Antonelli
Channel 6 News reported that rioting at Miami Edison Senior High School seems to have started when a student objected to the principal's behavior in disciplining one of the male student yesterday. This occurred in the lunch room. A student by the name of Watson seems to have been the main player in a physical altercation that occurred and this is what the students objected to. Claims are being made that either the principal or the student got physical depending on who is being interviewed regarding this. In response, today, a protest was planned by students texting one another to organize a response. The protest obviously got out of hand. Riot police and regular police were all called in and the school was put in lock down. Traffic on North West and North East 62nd street was in gridlock. This is the street that runs in front of the high school. As of now the schools gates are closed. Some students were injured, none seriously and three police were injured. If you watched the video you could see one student being put in hand cuffs but resisting until he was surrounded by six police .

Three police departments were on the scene. When the police appeared on the scene it was not a peaceful protest, milk crates and water bottles were being thrown. You could see some parents getting into the face of the police and one Mother being put into handcuffs. She was also resisting arrest and it took at least five police restraining her to get her subdued. Why should this happen? The parents show no respect for authority either. Other parents were being very aggressive with the police on the scene. Traffic was snarled, students were either still in the school building or being signed out to parents as the police were trying to establish some control.

This is one of many episodes from campus shootings to weapons scares that have been occurring more and more frequently in schools all over the United States not just Miami. Schools are requiring armed personnel, escape plans, programs that never existed when my children went to school or when I went to school. My question? What is going on ?

When did respect for elders, police, teachers go out the window? When did the young generation become so violent? My husband always said beware of the next generation they'll kick the canes out from under the elderly. It seems to be coming true.

Gangs of young thugs attack the homeless. Children kill children, remember Lionel Tate? Recently here in Florida, a young child, 11 or 12 years old bludgeoned an infant to death .

It's hard to fathom. It seems like "Lord of the Flies". Who is raising these children, is anyone? They appear to be without morals, without a sense of responsibility, without a consciounse. The music the children listen to is all about violence and shows no respect for women. The language the children hear and repeat is way out of bounds. Four letter words are part of the everyday vocabulary and the music.

Yesterday a student was shot at another local high school. When did we ever hear anything like this in previous generations? Your child isn't safe at school.

As of this evening 16 of the students, brought in wearing flex cuffs, were being processed at the Juvenile Assessment Center and are looking at charges of rioting and resisting arrest . Both the police and the school board will be investigating the stories.

Why is our society becoming so violent? What can be done to stop all this? Where does it go from here?
