There are many options and preparations of chocolate milk. You've got your Qwiks, your Boscos, your Ovaltines ("Why don't they call it Roundtine?"). Sometimes the milk people make their own chocolate milk and put it right in the gallon jug for you. But these are sub-par imitators.
There is only one chocolate milk drink that can satisfy my craving. That would be Hershey's Chocolate Milk Mix. I'm not talking about the syrup that you can also pour onto your ice cream. I'm talking the powder stuff that comes in this box. I guzzle this stuff up like my life depends on it. I was thankful when they reduced the price from about 5 bucks to $2.55, but perhaps I should have seen the writing on the supply-and-demand wall of what was to come.
About a month ago, I went to my local Jewel-Osco to do our weekly grocery shopping. On my list was "Choc Milk Mix" in really bad handwriting. I moseyed on down Aisle 3 featuring pancake syrups, cereal and coffees. I grabbed some Life cereal for the fiance. It was buy-one-get-one-free and I used a coupon for 75 cents off. SCORE! I continued down the aisle to the chocolate milk mixes and syrups and I already had my arm up to grab my Hershey's Chocolate Milk Mix when I realized it wasn't even there!
There was no vacant spot on the shelf to where it would have been. There was no new packaging (they changed it about 8 years ago). It was no where to be found. I wondered if they just didn't have it this week because our Jewel-Osco sometimes doesn't have all the products stocked. So I left mix-less and prepared to keep the item on my list for the next week.
One week passed, then another, and another. And I soon realized that the Hershey Corporation must have said to itself, "If only one skinny little Jewish dude in Chicago is the only one buying this crap, then we just won't make it anymore!"
So here I am defeated, deflated, downcast, despondent, and other synonyms starting with "D". I am forced to move on with my life without Hershey's Chocolate Milk Mix. A piece of my childhood will not go on with me until Hershey decides to sack up and give us chocolate milk lovers what we really need. I am in the process of auditioning other chocolate milk mixes, but I know it will never be the same.

Post a CommentNo wonder I can't find it any longer, I've searched every store in Houston.
I am so glad to see that I am not alone...Nothing satsfies my craving for chocolate milk anymore. I miss my Hershey's mix...I remember it in a yellow and brown can...I would put a big extra spoonful and let it settle in the bottom of my glass and eat it with a spoon after I drank the milk...Hate all this other stuff...tastes so nasty!
I used to drive 50-miles out of state to purchase this wonderful chocolate concoction.... I still have a little left in my last batch of the stuff. I will cry when it is all gone....
Have any of you tried their "Bliss" mix? It comes in the box with individual packettes. I have tried it in the white choc. and it is wonderful! I think it also comes in the regular chocolate too. I can't find it here (little town in Mississippi) but my daughter found it at Wal-Mart in Baton Rouge for me.
45 years I had an affair with Hershey's Instant, now I'm lost. I thought maybe my local Von's was just being selfish by not supplying the powder, but as I scourged other grocery stores I found the same emptiness. Then stark reality set in. I'm screwed.
I had the same experience at my local Fareway. I remember because the week before I had been begging my Dad to let us get more than one container, and he was all "They're not going to run out C!"
but. they. did. .___.
It was awesome stuff. Nothing tasted like it. Quik, Swiss Miss, nothing even comes close. All are pale comparisons to the one true mix
I to love hershey's chocolate milk mix and when they stopped making it I stocked up. I am half way through my last one it's a shame the other mixes don't cut it. I have been drinking this since I was a kid. I just had a glass with my peanut butter and jelly sandwich yummmmy:)
I got two cases as they were disappearing and dread the day when I take the last from the last container. I use it now as a special treat rather than every glass of milk like I use to...
I hear ya! I even remember the tin we had when I was a kid in the 70s: Yellow with a bright-eyed little boy on the front with Hershey's Instant splashed across the top. MISS THAT!
