Rise in Infectious Disease and How Americans Can Prevent Them

Dawn Hawkins
It appears that there is a rise in infectious diseases in the United States. According to a report on the healthyamericans.org, at least 170,000 people in the United States die every year from infectious diseases that are either new or re-emerging throughout the country. That is more than the population of most small town in the country. That is nearly half the population of some states in the country. That is a huge portion of the population in the United States. That is a scary thought.

Contributors to this fact are the climate and weather changes, globalization and resistance to antimicrobial medications. These changes are causing us to lose the ability to fight off infectious diseases and it may do us well to find the solution for it before infectious diseases take over our world and we lose control of the ability to fight them off. We are already fighting daily to keep up with all the new infectious diseases and the resurgence of infectious diseases of the past. It is important that we realize just how important it is to get vaccinated for the infectious diseases we already know about in order to keep the new infectious diseases as a priority for a fix.

One of the biggest problems is that we seem to have become immune to antibiotics which kills the bacteria's that are causing our illnesses. That is exactly what happens when we take too much of the drugs that help us so much. The body becomes immune to it altogether because it gets to used to the idea of having the antibiotics in the system. When antibiotics don't work, it is much harder to fight your way back from the illnesses. Antibiotics are the only way to completely get rid of some illnesses. Without them, it can be deadly. How do we fix this problem? We have to stop using antibiotics so much. That is what causes its inability to work properly. We use it far too much. The only other solution is to find something that works as well or better than the antibiotics do. That might be a tough job, but it may be the only solution there is to an ever-growing infectious disease problem in the United States.

Scientists already put out a great deal of effort in finding cures for diseases so that we can all live a healthier life. We all need to keep in mind that we also have to do our part to stay healthy. The United States is clean happy but health happy hasn't been a high enough priority in our lives. In order to keep ourselves from getting these infectious diseases, we have to make our immune systems stronger. In order to do that, we need a change in diet and fitness all around. We could easily do that by following models such as that of Western Australia where exercise and good diet is a much higher priority. Though we can't do the outdoor activities year round like those in Western Australia, there are many ways to keep fit year round.

There are many other countries around the world that live much healthier lifestyles than that of the United States. It is time to model our behavior after another country when it comes to fitness. That may be one of the only ways to lower our risk of getting infectious diseases in the future. There is never a guarantee that it won't happen to us, but if you look at the statistics, the United States is one of the most unhealthy nations in the world as compared to other rich countries. The stronger the body, the stronger the immune system. That doesn't mean you have to be a muscle man/woman. You can strengthen the body inside by eating right and on the outside by exercise. We have used medications far too often to get rid of illnesses that we may never have gotten had we been fit to start with.

We all need to start considering the fact that infectious disease is on the rise and that there are ways to prevent it from occurring to us. The main thing we can do is to continue to worry about germs to an extent but to concentrate more on overall fitness and health issues in our daily lives. The people of the United States often have a habit of closing the barn door after all the animals have escaped. It's time to work on getting the barn door closed before the animals even realize it is open.
