Rise in Teenage Depression

The statistics for depression are staggering. The rise in teen-age depression has been on the rise. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of teen age depression and knowing when to get medical help may very well be life saving. Untreated teen-age depression can lead to violence, drug addiction and even suicide.

Teenagers are often said to be moody, quiet and suffer from low self-esteem. While some of this behavior is normal for a teen ager, being aware of your teens normal moods will help you be aware if there is a problem.

Educate yourself for the signs and symptoms of depression. Teen agers may have different symptoms than adults. Many great websites list the symptoms. WebMD has an extensive list. Symptoms to be aware of are problems at school, running away, eating disorders, low self-esteem, losing interest in previously enjoyed activities, violence, drug problems and suicide. If you see any of these signs in a teen ager be prepared to help them or to get them help.

If you suspect a teenager of having the signs and symptoms of depression, you should first seek the guidance of their primary health care provider. They will be able to rule out any other possibilities that may be causing these symptoms such as disease or disorders. A health care provider will also be able to offer assistance and recommendation as to counseling or medication that the teen ager may need.

Helping a teen ager deal with depression is often not an easy task. They are feeling hurt, alone and many other feelings. Being a teen ager is learning to deal with feelings, adding depression to this makes it even harder. Learn to listen to the teen. Listen, not lecture is key. Let them talk. Do not insert your opinions. Be sure to hear them out. Truly listen to what they are saying, giving them your full attention.

Learn more about depression and encourage your teen to learn also. If your teen were dealing with any disease you would learn all you could about it. Depression is no different. Knowledge is power. It will give you and your teen the tools you need to help overcome this.

Encourage them in physical activities. Something as simple as walking can help lesson depression. Physical activity is known to help clear the mind. It will help them to get in shape. It helps them with a more positive self-image.

Encourage them to join in social activities. School and Church activities are a great place to start. Have them volunteer to help others. Activities that get them out and working with others to make a positive change will help their self-esteem.

Keep the lines of communication open with the teen. Maybe there are things that your teen does not feel comfortable talking with you about. Help them to find someone they do feel comfortable talking to. A pastor, a guidance counselor or even a teen peer counselor are people that are responsible that they may feel able to open up to.

Know when to get them more help. Depression is a serious disorder. If the teen shows any signs of depression or violence get them help. Encourage them to ask for help if they need it. Knowing that they can ask for help at any time may be a vital key to getting them over the hard times they may go through when suffering depression.

Teen-age depression is a real disorder. Helping your teen who suffers from depression will help give them life skills they will need all through life.
