Risks of Hanging Caged Birds Outside

Placing Standing Cages Outdoors Potentially Harmful

Caged birds love fresh air and they enjoy being outside so many bird owners will hang them under the porch or from a tree in the backyard. Perhaps the bird is in a standing cage. They to can be moved outdoors. Bird owners usually won't leave the birds permanently outside but only temporarily. While this allows the bird to experience more out of life it does has a down side.

If the bird is left unattended all sorts of things can happen even if they are being checked on occasionally. Some owners will leave their front door open while the caged bird is hanging under the porch. This way they can look out the door when they pass by or they can take a glance if they are watching TV. Here's what can happen to the caged bird outside even when there is checking points by the owners.

If the cage is hung or placed in the shade when the shade shifts the bird may be left in direct sunlight. This can be deadly if it's during the heat of the day especially in summer. The bird can dehydrate or have a heat stroke.

High winds can blow the cage down hurting the bird, possibly killing it or causing it to escape with or without injuries. Dust, pollen and other particles can blow into the bird's eyes or into the bird's nose. The bird may suffer from a runny nose, and dry itchy eyes. It might sneeze, develop allergies and have difficulty breathing.

Insects can bite the bird. Mosquito's can give it west Nile disease. It can get spider bitten. Wasps can sting it. Snakes can crawl in the cage and bite it and depending on what kind of snake crawls in it might eat it.

The bird is exposed to diseases that wild birds carry. A wild bird might decide to land on the cage or bird mess might get dropped into it. Either way a domestic bird can become quite ill and suffer a fatality if its comes in contact with mess or is exposed to an airborne disease a wild bird has. Wild birds also have mites and can spread them to the domestic bird.

Leaving a caged bird outdoors can endanger it to birds of prey. Predators such as the hawk might decide to make a meal of it and knock the cage over causing the bird to suffer injuries. They might land on the cage and cut the bird with their beak or claws through the cage. If anything else it could cause the bird to have a heart attack by scaring it to death.

Stray cats can knock the cage down. This to can injury the bird. The cat might be able to get a hold of it, playing with the bird, slashing, clawing, running and jumping on it until its ready to kill it.

Strangers may come along and harass the bird. They may throw rocks at the cage or even steal it. Keep in mind that you never know what someone will do around a bird.
