Ritter's Frozen Custard: Better Than Ice Cream

Brian Munger
If you are taking a vacation in Daytona Beach, Florida, then the first place you're going to go to is the beach. Then, maybe you'll go to the Daytona USA facility and take a tour of the race track. Sounds like a great day. But you can make it even greater if you visit a certain place in Port Orange, which is next door to Daytona. The place I'm referring to is Ritter's Frozen Custard stand. They serve frozen custard that makes me people drool just at the sight of it. Personally, I refer to it as "ice cream," but the technically correct term is "frozen custard."

One key thing to remember is that you are eating in Florida; therefore, your frozen custard will not stay frozen for very long. Custard has a softer texture than regular ice cream, so it melts even faster than your average ice cream cone . . . so eat quickly! This location has plenty of tables outside with umbrellas to help shade your tasty treat, but the umbrellas aren't nearly powerful to keep your custard frozen for very long. Ritter's does not offer any seating inside their building, so you can't sit down and relax in cold air conditioning and take your sweet time to eat your sundae. I would even recommend holding off any conversations until AFTER you are done eating! You should immediately lick away when you get your cone or bowl! If not, you will soon be DRINKING custard soup!

Don't expect to find a bargain here. If you are with a party of five, then expect to pay around $25.00. You're not going to find any cheap $1 cones at this place. You get what you pay for. At Ritter's, you get 100% quality and taste.

One thing to keep in mind is that this place gets VERY crowded on weekend nights. If you are there on a Friday or Saturday night during the spring or summer, you will witness pure chaos. Most of these people are the locals. They found a good thing in their neighborhood and they keep on coming back to it. You'll be lucky to even find a place to sit if you go there on a Friday night. So, if you're vacationing for a whole week, I would recommend going on a weeknight, instead. Or, just go earlier in the day if you go there on the weekend.

I am not an ice cream or custard expert, so I can not give you any specific reasons why people go crazy for this place. However, if you taste it, you will begin to understand what so many other people in Daytona have already discovered.

Ritter's is located at 4629 Clyde Morris Boulevard, Port Orange, Florida 32129. Their phone number is (386) 760-1082.
