River Rafting in Upstate New York

Where to Find the Best Rafting Trips Upstate

John Garamond
River rafting is in many ways the perfect summer activity: you're drinking in the sun, you're staying cool in the water and you're having the time of your life. Whether you do it with friends or family, with young children or teenagers, whether you're looking for white-knuckle adventure or just a calm boating trip down a quiet river, there's a river rafting trip in upstate New York that's perfect for you.

While rafting is best in spring when the rivers swell up with ice melt from up north, summer and fall also offer some spectacular rafting - if you know where to look. You will probably be spoiled for choice from all the trips that various rafting companies have to offer. Most such trips include guides for your raft, equipment rental, wetsuits and sometimes even lunch if your trip is longer than 4 hours. However, if your group is small or odd-sized, you might end up sharing a raft with another group. Use it as an opportunity to get to know other rafting enthusiasts, or do the trip yourself!

River Rafting Float

For the perfect relaxing day out in the water, head to the Lower Hudson Gorge with a raft and paddle your way down the gently rolling waters. A safe, easy trip for all ages, your lazy river "float" trip can easily be spiced up by restless teens or older folks looking for more activity by simply jumping off the raft to swim in the deliciously cool river. Pack a cooler and some munchies for snacks and drinks right on the boat. For an all-inclusive rafting trip, try Tubby Tubes & Co.

Whitewater Rafting

For adventure enthusiasts, young and old! Just slip into a wetsuit, lug your raft into the water, and head on out to the thrill of your life. Upstate river rafting companies like Whitewater Challengers and the Hudson River Rafting Company offer whitewater trips for kids as young as five. These 'easy' whitewater rides on the Middle Moose River last 2.5-4 hours, and cost $25-30 for children under 12 and $35-$40 for adults. For families with slightly older children or beginners looking for a bit of a challenge, the class III and IV rapids of Black River or the Hudson make a perfect day's trip lasting 4-6 hours, costing $50-$80. For a real challenge for experienced rafters, try the Lower Moose River rapids. Trips are priced at $85-$110, and last 4-8 hours.
