River of Red

Jessaka Romine
Trails of red across the skin
Running in small rivers
Relief is brought with the sight
Causing a small, quick shiver

Eyes closed, my head tilted back
Memories rush to the surface
Hopeless to try and fight them
They have now served their purpose

The past flashing behind my eyes
Out and into the red they flow
Your face appears and my heart stops
I do not want you to go

As you begin to fade away
With everything I cling to you
But it's already over now
There's nothing I can do

Eyes open and the present returns
The river of red becoming pools
The memories are slowly leaving
The heat has began to cool

Tears slide away slowly
They are without any regret
The demons will win this time
My fate has been finally met

As life leaves me quietly
Peace begins to settle in
And this single tormented life
Has come to meet its end.
