The big holiday dinner! Roast turkey, sweet potatoes (or yams), mashed potatoes swimming in gravy, green salads, and pumpkin pie-the thought of the holiday feast makes the mouth water. And since thinking about all that food doesn't put weight on anyone, feel free to do it. In addition, most people want to believe in the saying that food consumed with friends contains no calories. Which means we can think about and enjoy the holiday feast with no guilt about gaining weight! Well, almost.

Although the holiday feast may still be a few weeks away, it seems like summer was here just yesterday. In fact, for some of us, it seems like the summer of '42 was here just yesterday! And that also means it will seem like the holiday meal with its golden, roast turkey will be here tomorrow.

It really is time to start thinking, planning and preparing. Was last year's holiday turkey too dry? Or undercooked? Are you wondering if you can do it the old-fashioned way and put the turkey in the oven the night before? Well, okay, the really old-fashioned way was to cook it over a blazing fire outdoors, but you don't want to go there ... do you?

Or maybe you already know how to cook the turkey, but you're not sure how long you can safely store those left-overs before they turn into E.coli. You might be wondering if the pies need to be refrigerated and how long the left-over gravy will last before it stiffens like concrete.

And if none of those questions plague you, perhaps you're just looking for a few new dishes to include with the traditional holiday fare.

Whatever the reason, now's the time to make sure that any questions you have about roasting that gobbler are answered, and to check out new recipes. To that end, use the hotlines, helplines, toll-free numbers, and website addresses above to help you roast the most golden, juicy bird on the block, as well as to find a few new recipes to impress the family this season.

And when the big day arrives, may your turkey be golden, your potatoes creamy, your gravy smooth, and your pies delicious ... and may a few of your family also be friends, so all that food you eat during the feast won't contain any calories.

Happy holidays!

What a great roundup of links and troubleshooting advice! Although, I personally try to touch turkey only after someone else has cooked it. :)

I did not know about all the resources to help with cooking a turkey. In my day we relied on a phone call to your mother or grandmother. Good article!
