Why Robert Randolph and the Family Might Be the Best Band Around!

Mark Fowler
Robert Randolph and the Family Had their coming out party with the CD "Unclassified". Like lots of other so- called Jam bands, they had developed a large cult following, mostly based on their live shows. They might just be the best band in the US today, combining the energy of Hendrix with a Gospel backbeat, and the soul of Earth, Wind and Fire with a positive message, without getting too preachy. The love of entertaining shines through every performance they do.A live CD "Live at the Wetlands" made the rounds in stores and sold well, but would the RR experience translate to a studio CD?

This reviewer is proud to say that it does. Robert Randoplh, armed with his trusty Pedal Steel guitar, plays riffage that calls to mind every great guitarist from Jimi to Stevie Ray, but with a slight twist. Since the Pedal Steel has a unique, almost vocal sound, it is capable of a range of sounds that transcend the guitar into etherial, banshee wailing.

Now, you add to that the Phillip Bailey-ish falsetto of Danyel Morgan, and his funky bass, and throw in some gospel influenced blues rock, and you have an idea of the tasty gumbo this band serves.

The opening song, "Going in the right direction", is a strong opener. It showcases the churchy vibe of the band, and the positivity of their message. Gospel two- steps are rare on contemporary radio, and few bands do it as well as these guys.

A couple of the highlights are the ballad "Smile" and the chugging "Why should I feel lonely". Both songs, though opposite ends of the spectrum, show the versatility of the band. Both funky, and rocking, these two songs contain all the elements that make this band so good- and extremely tight groove, a rollicking party feel, and masterful musicianship.

I know they have a new CD out "Colorblind", and this reviewer hasn't heard it, but if it is anything like "Unclassified", I am looking forward to it!
