Robin Thicke's Something Else Early Album Review

Does the Lost Without You Singer Deliver on His Latest Album?

The Reviewer
Robin Thicke is still running off the runaway success of Lost Without You. The song catapulted him from an underground favorite to a mainstream media darling. Will the added pressure of retaining his newfound stardom get in the way of his creative process? On his new album Something Else, Robin has a tall task to face, is he up for the challenge?

The first single off of Something Else is Magic. The song is much more up-tempo and danceable than Robin's traditional singles. The song is very 1970's and features a strong horn section. The song was a good choice to reintroduce Robin to the audience.

The second single is The Sweetest Love. The track is arguably the best song on the whole album. The track sounds like an acoustic version of Can You Believe It? Overall the track stands out and should do well commercially.

Cry No More is one of the stronger tracks on the album. The song is not that foreign to Andre 3000's Prototype. The song features a strong instrumental introduction and a strong chorus.

The title track Something Else channels early 1980's Off The Wall Michael Jackson. The song is interesting sonically and just different than what is out. The song is also not what you expect from Robin Thicke.

Sidestep also channels the Off The Wall era. The song is fairly solid yet just does not stand out compared to the other album cuts.

Loverman is a nicely produced and performed mid-tempo track that shows robin at his strongest point; doing mellow, melodic, and acoustic based music.

Shadow Of Doubt is one of the strangest sounding tracks on the album. The song is almost alternative in vibe.

The album closes with Tie My Hands. The track teams Robin Thicke with Lil Wayne over a Kanye West produced track. Originally the track was featured on Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III. The song is a lot more organic than a typical Kanye West produced track. The song definitely stands out from the rest of the album style wise.

Something Else is truly something else. The album is fairly solid compared to what is out in music today; however it does not live up to the strength of previous Robin Thicke efforts. His first two albums are much stronger than this opus. Overall Something Else gets 7.5 out of 10. If you are a fan of Robin Thicke make sure you pick up Something Else when it is available in stores on September 30th.
