Rock climbing is a sport that's steadily growing especially over the last several years. In the past, only the most athletic and trained individuals attempted rock climbing and it involved climbing up the side of a mountain. It was a dangerous sport that required lots of planning and training but that's not the case today. Many people still climb mountainsides and tackle the unknown, but there are other options available, making it possible for most anyone to climb, even children.
So who can go rock climbing?
Well, the short answer is that any able-bodied person can. If you are healthy enough to pull yourself up and climb the walls, then you are capable of rock climbing. Even some people with certain disabilities find joy and challenge in rock climbing.
There are no age restrictions on rock climbing but you do need to be old enough to know how to operate the equipment and wear the safety harnesses and devices. I have seen children as young as two years old go rock climbing with adult supervision and help. I have also seen many elderly people use rock climbing as a fun way to stay fit.
One reason why more people can go rock climbing now than ever before is that the equipment has improved, methods of climbing have improved and places in which to go climbing have changed as well.
Technology Brings Climbing to New Dimensions
Modern technology and indoor rock climbing facilities have opened the doors to a whole new world of climbing. Most indoor climbing facilities rent equipment so you can see how well you like the sport before you invest in gear. In fact, you don't even have to purchase gear at all if you visit a facility that rents it. These facilities usually have several different climbing walls designed for a variety of skill levels. They have special walls for the beginner and even ones for children. There are also locations where you can climb outside in a controlled environment to get a better idea of what it would be like to climb outside.
Special Requirements
There are no special requirement to go rock climbing so don't worry about not being strong enough. It's more about technique than it is strength. You don't have to hit the gym five times a week and be in perfect shape to rock climb. However, if you suffer from any type of medical condition, illness or injury, it's recommended you check with your health care provider before you begin climbing.
