Rock Music Play List for 4th of July Parties

Ideas for Play Lists with American Themes

Rachel de Carlos
It's time to crank up the tunes and set the atmosphere for an All-American rockin' and rollin' celebration. Here are some great song suggestions to get your family and friends in the mood for dancing or, at the very least, some foot tapping while they enjoy the get together.

No BBQ and fireworks party would be complete without the proud, strong voice of Bruce Springsteen singing Born in the USA. You can't help but move to the beat and sing along when you hear this song. Before the party is over, your guests will be asking to hear it again.

Neil Diamond's America reminds us of our heritage and those who came to America from all over the world looking for freedom and the fulfillment of a dream.

Lee Greenwood pays tribute to the entire country and expresses the pride all Americans feel for the freedom and safety we often take for granted. God Bless the USA is a song that will tug at the heart strings, but definitely has its place on a 4th of July play list.

No matter where you live, I Love L.A. by Randy Newman is going to sound great blaring from your speakers.

Pink Cadillac, another great release by Bruce Springsteen, reminds us of the good old days, hopping in the back seat of the car with your date. That's pretty darn American!

Celebrate another beautiful part of our country while playing air guitar with Rocky Mountain Way by Joe Walsh.

The Beach Boys never go out of style, especially along our coast. Everybody's gone surfin', Surfin' USA.

City of New Orleans by Arlo Guthrie pays tribute to Illinois Central's most famous daytime train.

Neil Young's enthusiastic rendition of Homegrown from Farm Aid II supports whatever is "home grown" in America.

Here's a quick list of other songs that will round off your 4th of July play list in a very patriotic, foot stompin' way:

Hello America - Def Leppard

Living in America - James Brown

Lost in America - Alice Cooper

(you can still) Rock in America - Night Ranger

John Mellencamp has some great music with small town America themes:

Pink Houses (Ain't That America), Small Town, Our Country, and R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A. (A Salute To 60's Rock)

Battle of New Orleans - Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (try NOT to move to this one!)

Made in America - Jon Bon Jovi

Buffalo Soldier - Bob Marley (fantastic video!)

America - Simon & Garfunkel

Catch Me Now I'm Falling - The Kinks (America to the rescue)

Take It Where You Find It - Van Morrison

For America - Jackson Browne (great collage of presidents)

Elected - Alice Cooper

Brilliant Mistake - Elvis Costello

Breakfast in America - Supertramp

Faces of America & Forefathers - Dan Fogelberg (excellent slide shows)

Livin' in America - Donna Summer

Chimes of Freedom - Bob Dylan

Freedom - Jimi Hendrx

Freedom - Pointer Sisters

Philadelphia Freedom - Elton John

Daylight Again (Find the Cost of Freedom) - CSN&Y
