Rock Springs Run State Reserve

Eric Brennan
Whether you hike, bike or ride a horse, you can enjoy the beauty of Rock Springs Run State Reserve. It's also home to the Wekiva River, however no river access is available for swimmers, canoeists or kayakers. But don't give up on the river just yet. A massive three bedroom cabin is available for rent that overlooks the gorgeous waters of the Wekiva River. Two canoes are available to take up and down the river at your leisure.

Of all the amenities at Rock Springs Run State Reserve, probably the best one of all is the Hammock House. This three bedroom cabin is set back in a sub-tropical oak hammock and overlooks the beautiful Wekiva River.

Cookware, dishes and utensils are all provided at the cabin for use in the kitchen. Three king sized beds fill the bedrooms and lines are provided to guests. A TV, fireplace and front porch with tables and chairs makes this cabin a must rent. But since there is only one, reservations are required in advance for this $200 a night Florida state park hidden gem.

But don't think that just because the cabin is the best part of the park doesn't mean there isn't plenty of fun stuff to do at Rock Springs Run State Reserve. Off-road bicyclists will find 15 miles of awesome multi-use trails. Because the trails are shared, don't be surprised if you spot other hikers or the occasional horseback rider on the same trail. Use caution when you're riding on the trail.

While hikers and bikers share the trail, horseback riders are in for a special treat when visiting Rock Springs Run State Reserve. A primitive horse camp is set up on the trails on a first come first serve basis. Stalls, tethers and posts are available for tie ups. Several ground grills are set up for camper's meals. Non-potable water and access for RV's and tents are available for horseback riders only. A restroom and shower area is set up near the horse stalls.

The reserve is home to the Wekiva River. Two primitive campsites for canoeists and kayakers only are located along the river. The best way to access the campgrounds are from Wekiwa Springs State Park, located just up the road from the reserve. Canoe rentals can be found at the nearest town and several outfitters offer guided tours along the river.
